We can't even know that it was the punch that made him go down. My impression now and then is the same as is expressed here:

"Solis did not appear hurt from the punch, but he stepped back and lost his footing. He went down, and it was quickly clear that Solis was in trouble -- but not because of his head. He had a problem with his right knee and was unsteady as he struggled to get to his feet by pulling himself up as he grabbed on to the ropes. As Solis struggled to move on the bad knee, referee Guadalupe Garcia called off the fight as the opening round was coming to a close.

A scan revealed tears to Solis' anterior cruciate ligament and external meniscus, as well as cartilage damage in his right knee."

And even if he did go down from the punch, I've never seen someone's knee give up totally just because of that. So a freak occurence, quite possibly a bad knee going in. Doesn't say much about Vitaly's quality, much more about Solis's bad luck or about the state of his knee or a bit of both.

Again - do you believe Byrd beat Vitalty?

Stop quoting. I have watched the fight more than once and am well aware of the injury.

I felt like Byrd was on his way to a wide loss against Vitali. Others will argue otherwise until they’re blue in the face.

Not that I think it matters all that much, due to farce that was VK/Solis, I think there is understandable confusion, when it comes to the apparent placement/non-placement of Solis, in the Ring Magazine Ratings.

A Ring Ratings Update (online), dated March 8 2011, saw the decision to drop Valuev from their Heavyweight listing, due to his extended period of inactivity (Valuev would never make a return). Up to this point, Valuev had held the #8 spot.

In the words of ringtv.com (in an article by Doug Fischer): "[Valuev's] departure pushes up Alexander Dimitrenko (No. 9 last week) and Chris Arreola (No. 10 last week) one spot each, respectively, and makes room for Odlanier Solis to enter at No. 10."

Considering the specific wording here^ and, bearing in mind that the online announcement was made 11 days prior to VK/Solis, as well as the events of the bout itself, it would not surprise me if Solis never actually made it to the published ratings.

Soilis was rated, I saw it in print for at least two issues before the fight. Keep in mind the magazine is 2 months behind when it went into print and has live internet ratings. The semantics of the ratings are not discussed nor should they be.

Thanks for adding to the thread. Does Doug still post here?

So what? Slobis was a bum. Right now Zelei Zhag is ranked #10. For what , taking a loss?

Solis was just another pudding on Vitali's resume. He could barely beat boxercise level Leif Larssen ffs

A bum? A world amateur champion, an Olympic gold medal champion and a pro contender was a "bum"?

By the way he beat the undefeated Larsen clearly via UD. Check the scorecards.

Don't need to because I watched it live and he looked crap against a guy who was worse than Dave Allen. Solis was a BUM!

On the topic of Solis, do you think Fury would see more risk in fighting the highly ranked Dillian Whyte or an undefeated Odlanier?

Would Jones have seen more risk in rising up to fight titlist Ruiz or Solis?

Would Foreman have rather fought Moorer or Solis?

Solis still was shitty against Larsen, but that was after the knee and with pathetic conditioning.

Definitely not. Holds no major wins, never unified, was not a champion for long (WBO doesnt count), was the 2nd champion when Wladimir had the title when Vitali came back. In his signature fight vs a old Lennox Lewis he got knocked out. Hes top 30. Maybe top 20. Definitely not top 10.

He should call a fighter like Solis a bum. It disrespectful as Solis was a highly decorated amateur and professionally ranked top ten fighter.

    I will add.

If you added up rounds won by a world champion. Vitali is probably #1 greatest of all time.

47 fights, maybe lost a total of 10 rounds. Who else even comes close?

Vitali is a legit top 10
