Not to be such a casual, but I would be a liar to say it wasn't my favorite division and still the one I continue learning the most about. Which fights are your very favorite in no particular order? Off the top of my head, two kinds of fights are my favorites: Chess, not Checkers. Ali v Foreman Walcott v Louis 1 Foreman v Moore Frazier v Foreman 1 Patterson v Johansson 2 Douglas v Tyson Tunny v Dempsey 1 & 2 Lord, you're in the wrong place tonight. Ali v Frazier 1 Dempsey v Willard Ali v Williams Foreman v Norton Foreman v Frazier Spinks v Tyson
Larry Holmes vs Weaver 1/Witherspoon/Norton Muhammad Ali vs Frazier 1 and 3 Evander Holyfield vs Bowe 1, 2, 3/Cooper Michael Moorer vs Bert Cooper Floyd Patterson vs Ingemar Johansson 3 Joe Louis vs Billy Conn 1 Rocky Marciano vs Walcott 1/Charles 2 Joe Frazier vs Jerry Quarry 1 Lennox Lewis vs Vitali Klitschko For impressive KO's but one sided fights George Foreman vs Norton/Frazier 1 Muhammad Ali vs Cleveland Williams Joe Frazier vs Jimmy Ellis 1/Bob Foster Lennox Lewis vs Hasim Rahman 2 Mike Tyson vs Michael Spinks Joe Louis vs Max Schmeling 2
Favourite bouts for various reasons Spinks beating Ali and Douglas beating Tyson, just because it showed we can have real life Rocky moments in our sport. Holmes vs Cooney merely because of where i was and the group of comrades i was with, and that was only a radio transmission. Bruno winning the title from McCall, just because big Franklins name was finally on the roll of honour that says World Heavyweight Champion, for one night only Bruno was the man, via punching and at the end grabbing, to the win. but a win is a win, no body said it had to be pretty. Ali vs Foreman Holmes v Norton Marciano vs Charles 1
A special memory most definitely, the situation we were in was not so nice, but esprit de corps was never felt stronger, and the memory of listening to the bout with those comrades still triggers that feeling of intense camaraderie.
Holmes vs Cooney. I won so much money from school pals in bets as most of them gambled a small fortune on Cooney winning, while I put everything on Holmes. My classmates saw a big 6ft 6 giant, with the kind of KO power not seen since Foreman retired, (according to some anyway) and figured that he would blitz the champion easily…after all he was floored in his last fight against Renaldo Snipes. And remember, Cooney had demolished Ken Norton in his previous fight in just a round they reminded me. Big Gerry was gonna brutalise Holmes, no doubt at all, they all said. Misguided fools! But I knew better and seeing Holmes finally prevail was the best feeling in the world as I collected the big bucks from my uninformed peers. Oh, and it was a pretty good fight too. Great times!
Ali v Foreman Ali v Frazier I,II & III. Ali v Norton II Ali v Liston I Holmes v Norton Foreman v Lyle Bowe v Holyfield I
Ali vs Frazier 1 Larry Holmes vs Ken Norton Holyfield vs Bowe Ali vs Foreman or Liston Foreman vs Moorer Lennox vs Rahman 2
It's weird, but the only HW title fights I rewatch are Lennox Lewis, Joe Louis, the two Liston blowouts, and the Rumble in the Jungle. I haven't even watched FOTC in about ten years.
Ah wait, that's not true! During lockdown I watched loads of the full HBO broadcasts and they had all kinds of HW title fights at the end, mostly from the 1990s. So I lied.
