Actually, that would have been a better phrase for the title here. Was Holmes a worthy champion, because regardless of his wins or impressive chin, public perception has a lot to do with why he didn't make 50-0.

Are you suggesting that "public perception" influenced Holmes' performance against Spinks, in 1985?

If that's the better phrase, why pick on Holmes out of the veritable legion of unsavory boxers in heavyweight history?

Did Holmes ever get convicted of sexual offenses, throwing cops into garbage cans, kidnapping/stabbing his wife and bringing his kids along for the ride, using hookers, heroin, coke, etc.? No.

    Just asking, I'm honestly curious.

Because, and I honestly don't mean to be offensive here, making this particular thread makes you look like a troll.

The criteria here is unclear to me, I thought it was about them as a person? Ali takes the cake as one of the worst people to hold the crown.

You seem to be basing your assessment on personality traits and not what he was actually paid to do.

Exactly my point. Though as a old story from a reporter from the era documented ," It was the hate that hate produced". Meaning the environment Clay grew up in created "Ali" ( Dont remember who the reporter was) Still, Ali was much worse than Holmes ever was as far as attitude for a period.
Think about it , Holmes never intentionally tortured an opponent in the ring. Ali did.
Regardless of the situation and Terrell's insults . Ali sadistically beat up Terrell for 15rds when he probably could've stopped him with in 10rds if he wanted to.
Ali is my favorite heavyweight, and I love the man. But to not point out some of his faults would make me " The blind ass fan with the blinders on" as some on this site are about their favorite fighters.

Storm-Chaser, you are way off base, particularly since you are talking about the man's character.

I don't know of any fighters who have done more for or invested more in their hometown communities than Larry Holmes. The city of Easton, PA unveiled a statue of him in a fighting pose as a tribute to what he has done for the town. He was a 7th-grade dropout, but the hometown high-school has given him an honorary degree in appreciation for what he has done for Easton.
Holmes walks the walk while others just talk the talk.
See https://whyy.org/articles/a-long-lovers-quarrel-larry-holmes-and-his-hometown/ .There are many other articles available online which go into his local accomplishments in more detail.

You do know, don't you, that you can go back and delete what you typed before posting? You don't have to leave it there.

I'm not actually on about this typo that you subsequently corrected, by the way. I mean this entire thread. You've had a proper brainfart here, haven't you?

Okay, I understand. I'm a newbie, please forgive me. I guess, it's just a game I don't know much about other than watching most of the mainstream fights and slowly learning about fighters.

I am slowly accepting that I am mistaken.
