I was very disappointed with Mayer, and also Baumgardner tbh. If they both earnt a $1 million for that they should count themselves very lucky. Baum was clueless on the back foot, if Serrano steps back up to 130 she batters her.

Agree, Shields is the currently clearly the best women boxer. Still fancy Laila Ali to have beaten her though.

Much as Shields grates with me I now consider her the best woman boxer ever. She didn't look that great to me in many of her previous contests (though she won them all very easily) so I gave Marshall a decent chance. But the way she dominated Marshall- who is definitely a special talent in the women's game- I have to give her her dues. Her speed and sustained intensity were phenomenal- pretty sure she would overwhelm Laila Ali. Katie Taylor has been in a number of close fights (at least one of which she should have lost)- Shields has been overwhelmingly dominant amateur and pro. So Savannah- don't feel too bad. Though clearly bested, you gave the greatest of all time a decent fight.

And you could argue she lost to Serrano, too.

    Katie Taylor
    Olympic Gold medalist
5 x World championship gold medalist
    6 x European Gold medalist
    Undisputed unified pro world champ
    & 2 weight world champ
and a classy respectful role model outside the ring unlike shields

    End of debate

Shields turned pro at 21 so her amateur achievements won’t have lasted as long (still won 2 Olympics and 2 world championships) and her pro career has been better. She’s still got almost 10 years on Taylor.

Just seen the fight did over 2 million viewers.

Wasn't Shields vs Marshall shown live on several different Sky channels ? It's still a great number and good advertising for women's boxing.

It was on Sky Showcase mate. Still great numbers regardless, but they should have kept it just on the paid Sky Sports channels. It would have done bigger numbers than most of their standard Saturday night fight nights anyway.

She might be/ Katie Taylor is probably the modern day flag-bearer though. She's one of the main reasons why these female fighters can sell out these arenas and fight on the same cards as male fighters.

    97 - 93, 7 rounds to 3, Claressa Shields the winner.

Savannah did not use her height, reach and power to her advantage in the fight. Whatever Team Fury taught her did not help. She fought like the smaller fighter and kept her left hand low as if she was some kinda Ali/Roy Jones imitation fighter.

If I am Savannah's chief second and the rematch happens, I am totally throwing out all the Fury stuff. It's foolish if you ask me. The taller, bigger girl should have used her legs better to cut the ring off, attacked behind the jab and set up the classic 2, 3 and 4 punch combinations to the head and body. Instead of doing that, Team Fury had her shuffling between orthodox and southpaw stances while trying to use awkward head angles. All that did was get her tagged and countered all night long by Shields.

Fook me, Sky talking about doing a rematch this summer at St James Park. No doubt it would be PPV and they'd be bigging the first one up as a close fight... 'this time it's personal' ... Marshall got outclassed so move on ffs.

I think I had Marshall winning one round, and that was when Shields seemed to take a round off. I was hoping for an entertaining bout but it was a total mismatch that I found boring. I did notice they were trying hard to make it sound close.

I still can't get over Marshall. She looked like a Hughie Fury impersonator.

I think Marshall could do better if she had a different game plan but I've no desire to see a rematch because-

1 - Rematches for every single big fight are not necessary and can stall fighter's careers
    2 - Shields won easily

People said in the aftermath that she should've jabbed more. How many jabs would Marshall have landed with that weird looking shuffle and slow jab? She's not hitting Shields with that, and it wouldn't deter Shields from getting off her own punches.
