Look an Liston's hands when the interview measure his next to Liston. Liston's reach is tremendous. Anyway good interview. Listion mentions Terell and a possible future opponent. Talks his tale or the tape, height, chest expansion ( says it 48.5 " ) Talks about what wrong with boxing, guys moving up in class. Liston is slow, but seems honest.

You're right I haven't seen this before. Thanks for posting it.

The thing that surprised me most about Liston, when I first started watching interviews with him, was that he came across as being much more intelligent than I had expected.

When he opened his mouth, I had expected him to sound like Clubber Lang.

Although was as scary as hell, he was in his own way quite a shy man.

I sometimes think that the Liston's and Tyson's of this world, are intelligent men, born into an environment that is very destructive to intelligent men.

I think the shyness you’re seeing is just careful words for the press in my opinion. His wit was created in the prison system, you’ll find the funniest people in the world there.

Jose Torres said Liston was a very smart ,given his background its no surprise he wasnt very articulate ,that doesnt mean he was not intelligent.
I'd hazard a guess his IQ was higher than Ali's.

I am sure that you are right about the prison system, but I also think that he was genuinely shy.

Someone once said that he was only comfortable around gangsters and children, and that is probably true.

When a child enters the room, he is all smiles, because they are so uncomplicated.

He was interviewed weeks before the 2nd Patterson fight the gaggle of reporters were as one saying why on earth would Floyd want to fight him again came the reply " who can tell a bird it can't fly " . I also see Liston as a sort of man child, he came across in the interviews I have seen as a somewhat sad and lonely figure, there are anecdotes that he was funny, and quite a wit on occasions, over the decades it seems in some quarters that he has been reevaluated as not the dour sour faced fighter the press would have us believe, but a more a man that was shaped by his circumstances, sad that his demise was shrouded by strange and controversial claims.
    stay safe buddy.

I've read the very same about kids. He liked the simplicity and the awe they had for him and he even visited his kid. I guess in his own world he couldn’t do any wrong so he was comfortable he was a money maker and it was the business he knew. I don’t regard him as intelligent however, smarter then you’d expect but he wasn’t something special from what I can tell.

I agree he was smarter then you’d expect but nothing special in the grand scheme of things. Just because a guy can make you laugh or be witty doesn’t entitle him to being called intelligent. I don’t think it’s a hazardous guess at all, Ali was borderline special and his actions reflect that.

I will add, that he was clearly a thinking fighter on paper.

    Very much so in fact.
