Fury s about it for me, that's really only because he's the hvt champ But I've lost touch with the other division s.
If you were a Rip Van Winkleish sort of guy, and you went to sleep in , ohhh, 1980, or so, you would be appalled at the drop off in quality....and 1980 wasn't even exactly the highpoint of boxing compared to the 60's and 70's.
The whole sport has declined, from weekly televised fights, to local boxing cards, crappy announcers and 4 belts per division ensuring fighters avoid each other. In my opinion , boxing has fallen and can't get up.
I rarely get around to watching modern boxing. It's generally not worth the money. One aspect of the sport that comes to mind that I feel has declined one thousand percent is the commentary, be it Showtime or ESPN+. It's God awful.
Nobody fights each other. 18 divisions with a possible 19th on the way. 4 belts with a 5th on the way. 2 lineal orgs. Everybody fights kinda the same. Bad commentators. Almost everybody has poor resumes. Guys that pretend to be ATGs because they have cool highlight reels. Fans themselves have poor knowledge of the sport. Overprotective promoters. Fighters take forever to fight. The East europeans that are supposed to be saving the day spend a big chunk of their prime in the ams. I'm pretty sure that's it. What is there even to look foreward to? Usyk-Fyry, Bivol-Berterbiev, Inoue vs Victim, and there dosent seem to be any massive hungry talents on the horizon when the aforementioned first four retire after those events, assuming they even happen, and if there was the list above would smother them and the fighters they are supposed to building their legend on anyway. I'm pretty sure boxing was never this horribly sparse year after year. There will always be fun fights, and decent fighters, mind you. But it seems like boxing is going to be a somewhat regional sport real soon. There is no reason to assume thing will improve unless some crazy billionare buys all of boxing and unites it. Sad to see the sport die with a apathetic sigh.
THIS ^^^ and hype, Hype, HYPE, in otherwords Lies... hyped up BS repeatedly in every part of the Sport, from Fighters, to Opponents to Stats & Legacy to Compu Box to every other thing you can say about boxing. Wounded and Dying for years.
I think the fights that happen are in general pretty good. Lots of entertaining battles to be made. Boxing does feel a bit shrunk from the 80s though
Do we hate, that today we have 18 divisions with 4 (at least) "world" champions in each? Yes, of course. Do we hate, that the best rarely face the best, and that it takes forever to negotiate a big fight? Sure we do. Do we hate, that many top boxers fight only once, maybe twice, a year? Yes, we can all agree on that. Do we hate a lot of other things, when it comes to how boxing is governed and promoted? Yes, absolutely. But that's because we are who we are: hardcore fans, who dream about what the sport could be like if done right! The average boxing fan probably doesn't spend a lot of time mulling over these things - because it's of little importance/interest to him. So using our "hardcore stance" to determine that boxing is dying (if not already dead!), really makes no sense at all (IMO).
I mostly follow the Heavyweights, and in recent years have enjoyed seeing some good competition in the division. Big fights don’t always get made, but that’s nothing new. I think the biggest problem is the judging decisions which make people lose interest. I’m sure there’s a better way of doing this, whether it be having more judges and excluding the outliers, or only scoring unanimous rounds.
Hate that politics makes it harder to unify. Best need to fight each other more. Instead of cruiser, super heavy(240+) should b a thing. I'm not calling great hvys of then "light hvys/cruisers" just bcuz there's more skilled behemoths now. Being undefeated is overrated. Mayweather plagued the sport w that I just wish he agreed to b in Undisputed but thats unfortunately not happening. Inactivity is hurting many top names
With pros, Gonzalez-Estrada trilogy I needa watch. Fury-Wilder n GGG-Canelo were ones I enjoyed. Women's division seems to b getting interesting. Much respect to them. Shields, Taylor, Baumgardner, etc We need to give more attention to lower divisions they're really special fighters but since they aren't in the more known divisions they don't get that attention. At least not here in the states. Boots Ennis, Shakur, Haney, Loma, etc I really like to watch. Hope all of them will b in Undisputed and hopefully more boxing games in the future. Appreciate Canelo for facing Bivol even if he came out short Best thing would b Crawford n Spence in games too as they aint fightin. Glad for the big fights that do happen.
I miss the days when fighters would meet the best and do it for 15 rounds. But modern boxing is still good at times. Now it only Bivol would fight AB, and Fury and Usky would fight. In the words of the late Mills Lane. Let's get it on! Mike Buffer will still kill it on introductions and the score card announcements!
Fee Fi Foe Fum, I Smell A Dirty Bum. We might get stuck with a constant rerun of Tyson Fury vs Deontay Wilder. Why us? Those trilogies are for the birds, those two are holding up progress. Those two should be charged with obstructing justice in the current heavyweight division. If Sonny Liston was alive, he would be tempted to put both upside down in a Dumpster. Ha Ha.
