Yes, the tassels seemed to go hand in hand with flashy styles. Not sure who the originator of it was. Can't believe I even thought of this, but I remember some fat Journeyman named Doug Phillips wore tassels when he fought Butterbean. Looked totally out of place on him... This content is protected
Mr Templar (The Saint), I think you're ready to take credit for determining the first instance and originator of tassels in boxing. Or, we can call it Saint Pat's Theory (SPT) if you like, tested repeatedly but yet to be disproven. Perhaps we could move on to other "firsts" at the same time - like the first known instance of a "skirt" being worn in the ring? There's also ponytails to consider (ala Kostya Tszyu) - anybody remember Tong Po from Kickboxer? He would say to Kostya "That's not a ponytail, THIS is a ponytail!".
Sure have Buddy, thanks. I have changed to a different Dialysis Center, it is up the street, it is called Da Vita, my hours are from 10:30 am until 2:30 pm.
At a guess, without checking, you’d think the Prince was a good chance for wearing tassels. Good Lord, imagine if Magic Jim Corbett wore tassels along with those trunks (vs Fitz). And I’m only talking on the boots (not elsewhere)!
Since this thread kinda also relates to “firsts”, since it seems Ali was the first to wear tassels - credit to Saint Pat, we can expand on the theme. I’ll add that Ali was also the first to introduce the shuffle way back in 1966 vs Cleve Williams - there are several other “firsts” that could be attributed to Muhammad - but I won’t siphon the examples dry. Across the board, I wonder what other similar type, reasonably deemed “firsts” in boxing we could reliably uphold? Perhaps a thread in its own right worthy of the subject?
I knew Doug. He was into his 30s when he decided to pick up a few bucks on the side fighting some club fights (and then got a modest payday or two). I think he won more than 100 amateur fights but mostly as a kid and teenager — topped out at like 139 and he was above 200 and didn’t train much for his pro outings. He would come by our gym from time to time — like maybe 2-3 times a year — and spar a few rounds. He was tricker than you might think, but mostly he worked with like middleweights because it was good for them to see a southpaw live. Good guy, but I agree on the tassels probably not fitting his pro fighting style, haha.
