It’s a longing for something that we once had. Something that really happened. When you’ve experienced that, it’s really hard to appreciate what you have in front of you today. People who pass their driving test think that any car that they acquire is great. And it is. Compared to public transport etc, it’s a marvel. But a guy who once drove a Lamborghini, isn’t really going to appreciate a Fiat.
There are still some very talented fighters and will always respect anyone who has the guts and dedication to get in that ring. But I also have to confess that it’s a bit disappointing. Fighters don’t keep active enough anymore. And you have a lot of guys who are turning pro too late and in some cases over staying their welcome in the game.. Too many titles. And we don’t often see the best fighting the best anymore and certainly not while the fights still mean something. In 1981 sugar Ray Leonard and Thomas Hearns were both prime susperstars and the world got to see them fight at their best.. fast forward things a few decades and we didn’t get to see PAC vs Floyd until they were both past it
We are going to be bored to death watching boring trilogies like Tyson Fury vs Deontay Wilder for the zillionth time. If I wanted to see reruns I could have watched late night reruns. How come Wilder cannot give it a rest? Those kind of trilogies make fight fans want to give up on boxing.
It is a confusing dumpster fire of over protected and non active fighters. All avoiding each other till there is an obvious advantage ( thanks Mayweather) and losing to a more competitive sport ( MMA) The only fight I want to see is Uszk and Fury. Otherwise local fight clubs do it for me now.
I doubt, that the average fan will start thinking about giving up on boxing, because Fury and Wilder fought each other 3 times (or Fury vs Chisora, for that matter)! This bothers only fans like us - the vast majority couldn't care less. Imagine if we grew up 100 years ago - in the roaring 1920s, by many called boxing's "Golden Era". How would we have felt about the many tri(or more)logies, that took place during that time? Would we have turned away from boxing, sick of watching the same fighters meeting each other over and over again - or would we still have been faithfull fans?
I agree. How do we get back to a place where the motivation for fighters is to fight the best, not protect their record by fighting tomato cans? There are two obvious matches right now that need to happen in the HW division. Fury-Usyk for title unification, and Wilder-AJ.
I respectfully disagree. These are not hardcore standards-anybody who is more than the most casual fan possible may well share some or all of these concerns. And others mentioned, like corruption & poor judging. Even if it was all complete novices, these problems have effected the popularity & credibility of the sport-which has been superseded by so many others, like UFC & its ilk. Losing us new talent, individuation, good fights & rivalries, authenticity... Plus those who are more harcore have every right to bemoan these things, due to Pure Appreciation of great competition, fair play & the historical legacy of a great sport.
Man, you guys really have no idea how lucky you are, being around in this era? Instead of appreciating what a great time this is to be a boxing fan... it's all about how boxing stinks, sucks, is dying, etc. Sure, a lot of things are wrong with today's boxing, but think about it... would you rather have been a fan back during the 1920s, when there was a heavyweight champion, even less active than today, who for his entire reign avoided his most serious challenger? During a time, where there was no way to keep up with what was going on in the boxing world, like we can today... and where there wasn't even a place like this, where hardcore fans could come together and discuss the sport? I see myself as being very fortunate to be able to follow boxing today - the good as well as the bad!
