Calzaghe without hesitation. I don't care what anyone says, I was there, I've seen his career unfold. Bunch of worthless WBO defenses in the 90's and early 00's, never unified with that German guy Ottke who held a legitimate title at the time in the IBF and also unified with the WBA, yet claims he wanted fights with Jones Jr and Hopkins when they were in their prime. Yeah, okay buddy. Fights Jeff Lacy who's only known for his loss vs Calzaghe and got toyed on by a shot 127 year old Roy Jones Jr 2 and a half years later. Fights Mikkel Kessler who has a reported injured hand, then fights Bernard Hopkins. I'm honestly not sure how someone can give credit to Calzaghe for that performance, some people rate it as his best win. I'm a person who despises Hopkins and was happy he lost that fight but come on, how can you win a boxing match throwing karate chops from different angles, I don't get it. He then retires on the corpse of Roy Jones Jr and some people want me to believe that he's a p4p ATG? Pssh
Don't forget Pavlik calling him out infront of Enzo Calzaghe after he got done with his Welsh stablemate Gary "The Rocket" Lockett. Pavlik was a very winnable fight for Calzaghe, he even bold faced called him out after his dominating performance. Calzaghe didn't want any of that and decided to fight Roy Jones Jr instead then retire from the sport.
That German guy Ottke kept getting beat on his home soil but kept getting the decisions. It was ridiculous. He wouldn’t leave Germany and nobody was allowed a decision against him. what about Byron Mitchel? He won and twice defended the WBA title, gets robbed against Ottke in a unification in Germany, then Calzaghe demolishes Mitchel in just two rounds after Ottke couldn’t do a thing with him! The Americans were raving on Lacy. They were swooning over him. New Mike Tyson and all of that carry on. Without Calzaghe to put things into perspective who knows where or what the Americans were going to hype Lacy into. Kessler was in his prime. And Joe had bad hands his whole careeer too. it’s not Joes fault that Hopkins still made history after losing to Calzaghe. That’s how the cookie crumbles sometimes. It wasn’t Calzaghes fault they met when they did. Jones would never come to Europe to fight Benn or Eubank in anyways. not me. I don’t think Calzaghe is p4p ATG but he paid his dues a whole lot more than somebody like Sven Ottke. He should rank higher than guys like Andre Ward but nowhere near guys like Ray Robinson or Hagler. But who rated higher at super middle? It’s not Andre Ward.
Another vote for Joe Calzaghe. Yes I know that you can only fight who's out there and he totalled up a recordd number of defences but Joe was fortunate that he competed in a lean era of supermiddles. I though he was lucky getting the verdict in that close one with Bernard Hopkins.
To some, Tommy Farr went "farr" longer in his fight with Joe Louis than he actually, according to most, did. Easy to say now but in retrospect, even I overrated Joshua.
Bruce Woodcock Naseem Hamed Chris Eubank Freddie Mills Henry Cooper BJ Saunders Johnny Nelson Ricky Burns
Great power and reflexes ,poor technique and balance.and soft defences ,like Eubanks. I won money when Barrera exposed him and enjoyed every second of it!
I just never really took to him, Noel. One of those times where a personality jarrs a bit. But no doubt he was successful.
