I met Collins years after the event and he was still raging that the Jones fight didn’t happen. He was prepared to do anything but Jones would not take that fight. He just wouldn’t. And Collins fought in America for a long time. He fought McCallum, he fought Reggie Johnson. I truly believe he would travel to fight anyone. jones wouldn’t travel.
I think I’ll post what I want when I want instead, but thanks for your thoughtful guidance and for keeping track of the content from my posts. I don’t recall ever bashing Pep, btw. I do think the ‘he was a crippled old man after the plane crash’ narrative is belied by his performance in the ring after that with the long winning streak at top level and the fact that no one has yet pointed to any contemporary articles or observations that he was washed up at the time. This narrative comes up only for the singular purpose of diminishing Sandy Sadder’s accomplishment of beating him three times. It’s not bashing someone to say ‘well actually he was still a great fighter,’ lol. LaMotta was a weight bully who often fought welterweights when he was a light heavyweight. Why shouldn’t this be pointed out?
Eubank never wanted to fight Roy Jones, in his own words "I was happy being one of the best, but never wanted to be the best" that was Eubank's answer on the possibility of fighting of a prime Roy Jones. I also find it laughable you mention Jones should of fought Ottke ? In a previous post. A overly protected champion who hid over in Germany, because he was gifted every close fight he ever had. Robin Reid got frigging penalized for hitting Ottke !!!! Why in the world would Jones fight him in Germany ? Calzaghe also never fought Ottke does he get penalized for not fighting him either ? Steve Collins himself retired at a very convenient time, when Calzaghe was his mandatory aswell. As for Dariusz Michalczewski again he was happy fighting in Germany, and Roy Jones was happy fighting in America. Why is it all Roy Jones fault the fight didn't happen ? Dariusz wasn't willing to travel either, so i would say there both at fault and not just one sided in Jones favour. The same applies for Calzaghe aswell, who really wasn't that big of a name until the latter part of his career. And his resume was full of terrible opposition, so Calzaghe was also happy not traveling or having big fights, whilst beating the likes of Salem, Pudwill, Ashira.
Because Joe didn't fight the best, had no interest in doing so, didn't travel (Wales is not the home of boxing) Roy had some great wins then and he was known as untouchable.
The version of Roy Jones Calzaghe beat certainly isn't "a great win". Even Calzaghe himself said in his own words "i would never fight Roy Jones now, as beating him would mean nothing" but still Calzaghe fought him anyway a few years later contradicting his own statement.
I think so aswell he beat plenty of recognizable world class and former world champions, he gets a bit underrated nowadays because of his cocky attitude in his prime, which alot of people didn't like. And also the way he left the sport after losing wasn't a good look. But his actual career was a good one didn't he make like 14 title defences ? And the names he beat wern't mugs either Paul Ingle, Manuel Medina, Kevin Kelley, etc.
Why are you even trying to say its a good win over a completely shot Roy Jones, when Calzaghe in his own words stated otherwise ? Also Calzaghe may of been a bit past his best, but he was still competing a high level as evident by beating Bernard Hopkins previously. Roy Jones was completely shot its not even a comparison.
1) Roy was toast when Joe beat him. He was getting ko'ed for years before Joe beat him. And he still dropped Joe. 2) Hopkins was the older man, still dropped Joe, not the greatest of wins. 3) Jeff who? 4) Kessler was decent but nothing special.
Sheika had fought 4 times in 5 years, beating him at that point isn't saying much. Lacy got ruined by Calzaghe, and he himself was shot when fought Jones. Again beating Lacy at that point isn't saying much. I don't get what is your argument exactly ? Everyone knows Jones was completely shot by the time he fought Calzaghe. I've already told you a statement by Calzaghe himself confirms that belief. And beating shells of Lacy and Sheika don't improve your argument either.
100% right he only lost once and that was to an ATG.As you say his title reign was long and respectable and Naseem`s cocky personality definitely goes against him for many people including Fergy
Well I say it's a good win, and the fans were thinking Jones would win. At least many here were. You could say the same for Hopkins. That win is even greater.
