He's had a good career made a shed load of money , appears to be fully functional mentaly so the best time to retire & follow his idol The Marvellous one & enjoy life...he's earn't it imo...

#1 and not ranked since that Clenelo fight was a sparring session

He needs to retire but it seems like he wants to keep going

Not sure how you can call these weak divisions. Middleweight maybe has less depth but there are PLENTY of good fights to be made in both divisions.

That being said, having an undisputed champion for too long is not good for a division, so it would be nice to see Canelo step up to LHW.

You may be right. You know if you think about it, and if things were fair, decisions were right, the trajectory of his career should be winding down and or finished. With his only loss being his last fight at 40 years old to a young, prime Canelo for the undisputed Super middleweight title. If GGG got the two wins over Canelo that he deserved, he would now have 24 straight title defenses without a loss with 20 by KO. He would have clearly beaten Hopkins record for title defenses and have 2 signature wins over Canelo. So what if he struggled a little in the 2nd Canelo fight and Derevyanchenko fight. The older you get the tougher it gets.

At middleweight i would still put him at #1, although the jury is still out due to his oddly passive performance against Canelo, whether that is the new GGG or just a sub par performance. At Super middleweight , i would rank him in the top 5 or 6 conservatively. Maybe he can beat #3 Rider, or #2 Plant. There is also #4 Morrell and #5 Mbilli, forget about Benavidez at #1.
The thing is, is if he is trying to prevent going to war he is in the wrong sport. It seems the 3rd Canelo fight was fulfilling some kind of contract, so they can both go there seperate ways. If GGG made it a better fight, even in losing, a 4th fight could still happen, and that a fight i suspect Golovkin could still win if he had the mind to, but he would have to be willing to take years off of his life to do so, and i don't think he is willing to do that.

He's 40. That's really old in boxing terms. I know that adding too much muscle can make you sluggish but I think the main problem is just age and can't be fixed.

I agree with this post. I think he was flat against Canelo for a few reasons. 1) He's old 2) Canelo promised he would 'knock him out' and 'end his career'. GGG had success in #2 when Canelo walked onto his punches and maybe was looking to repeat that. Counter early, wait for Canelo to tire and open up the taps late 3) I think he's disillusioned with boxing and judging in general. He feels he beat canelo twice (and so do I) and got robbed both times. If he puts his ass on the line and goes to hell for the win, what's it going to be like getting robbed a third time? Why bother in that case. Play it safe and wipe the tears away with the big cheque.

Fights not being made weakens the division though. There's a young gun who keeps taking non title fights...

I think Banks wanted him to box also, not to worry about the power, the power was already there, he said. He needed to bring the power earlier.

Your right, and you can be sure his wife and family are reminding him that retirement is right around the corner, don't be getting yourself hurt now.

Yes, tough fight for GGG now he’s old and can’t let his hands go

that’s an incredibly weak top 10
