I think this is a solid assessment. The clen controversy really hurts his legacy. When it comes to the obviously terrible scorecards I don't think he personally is involved in that part of it, but he has been an obvious beneficiary. For me he is a great talent that is usually pleasing to watch and he is willing to take on all comers. I don't see him being a top 10 p4p all time or anything like that, but definitely called a "Great".

Clenelo deserves 27X more hate than he's gotten, actually.

It's called common sense. Who is the most well known and highest earning fighter in the sport? Typically that person is the face of boxing as in the most recognizable face, hence the face of boxing.

Does Canelo get too much flack for going up in weight classes, challenging himself and fighting reasonably regularly? Absolutely.
Does he get too much praise for a fighter that is a proven drug cheat? Yes.
Does he get the benefit of the doubt more than any other active fighter? Yes.

Canelo and his team are their own worst enemy. If his scorecards and drug testing were as genuine as his ability, then he would get much more praise.

Personally, I've never had an issue with the calibre of opponents that he's faced. As mentioned, if you compare him to the likes of Crawford or Spence, they are mountains apart.

He deserves some hate for sure, but I can't take someone seriously that uses childish and unclever nicknames for fighters.

I agree with everything you said here. Great post. In regards to the scorecards, do you personally think Canelo has a hand in that? At the end of the day I guess it doesn't really matter because the scorecards can't be changed, but I think if I knew for sure Canelo was directly responsible for them it would affect my opinion of him a lot more. I don't think he is involved in that, but I am just guessing.

Do I hold the scorecards against Canelo? No. Definitely not. However, Canelo has had a huge number of things 'go his way' over the years, which really should be investigated.

From a manslaughter case to the warrant for his arrest over his assault on Solis in 2011 (Canelo's brother was charged with making a false statement in taking the fall for Canelo).

To think that Canelo got such a corrupt card against Mayweather makes you question who, what and where that bias is coming from. Someone with very deep pockets is behind the Canelo machine, which must win at all costs. Even the most recent Bivol fight, he won 3 rounds at best, and yet they almost robbed Bivol.

It's not lost on me that Canelo's brother was also kidnapped prior to the Rocky Fielding fight, of which Canelo had to negotiate his release. Suspicious?

Back in 2019, a video was released about Canelo being a benefactor to a money laundering scheme. The video was pulled and 2 articles about it mysteriously disappeared soon after. Going back, I can't find much, other than the translation that was put on Boxing Seen.

The US Treasury Department denounces a corruption scheme that includes bribes to former governor of the state of Nayarit, Roberto Sandoval, with alleged links to money laundering through a foundation in which 'Canelo', a friend of the former official, is a benefactor.

A foundation of the mexican boxer. the nexus between narcotáfico and blockade of active articles was a friend of canelo. alberto garía explains. alberto: the network of corruption denounced by the administration of washington involved the famous boxer soul alvarez. it was reported in mexico that the former governor, roberto sandoval, received bribes from drug cartels. his family is involved and to launder money he used a foundation in which cinnamon was a benefactor. he received signs. and in the last year of his administration, violence and homicides in the state increased. the story of the canelo with the governor who says they are like a family is public. [speaks in english] [speaks in english] the treasury department of the united states was indicted by mexican prosecutors, frozen bank accounts and confiscated furs. here we are ready for any vehicle to be informing and clarifying. and not defending ourselves because the one who is guilty defends himself. civil organizations requested that the boxing champion reports on his donations. where his president was the nephew of the former governor. roberto sandoval, who was governor, defends himself. it is a foundation that was made before becoming governor. it is totally proven how it was built and how we have helped

Apparently, Canelo was long-time friends with Miguel Jose Leonel Martinez too. Miguel was arrested for leading a prostitution ring for the Jalisco New Generation Cartel.

It's hard to decipher anything online surrounding the cartel, as the Mexican news is a bit of a mess...

This is nothing new though, Julio Cesar Chavez had to 'kiss the ring' with the cartel, so it wouldn't surprise me in the slightest if Canelo had ties too. In the UK, MTK Global was founded by the Kinahan family.

A lot of the so-called hate is just people pointing out the negative to balance out the overwhelming nut hugging that goes on when it comes Canelo, it's not actually hate for Canelo but a check on bs. We need those checks or he would be deemed the next coming and people would have him in heaven sitting on the right side of God.

Probably so, but I will say one thing. He atleast has multiple fights a year unlike the vast majority of other boxers at the top. Most of those other guys don't even fight so you forget they exist half the time.
