I have read that people were surprised by the height disparity, but what is your indication Liston was at all effected y it?
Williams was as tall & it caused him no psychological difficulties in 2 brutal blow outs.

None of the fighters who fought in black and white era beat him.

Posters must be deluded if they think Byrd fight shows Ali could beat Big K. Byrd was losing rounds because of his ineffective attack. Ali would lose on points but see the bell.

Larry Holmes went life and death with novice Witherspoon and Carl Williams. Williams gave Holmes fits due to his jab. VK was even better.

To beat VK you need size, skill and aggression. Matching jabs with him would be dumb.
    WK was not aggressive enough.

Lewis is your best bet (as one could see in 2003), maybe Bowe (around 93).
Tyson and Holyfield are the only shorter/smaller boxers who could beat him.

There are at best half a dozen in history who could beat him.

Ali had about twice the height advantage Williams had.

And commentators of the day remarked on Liston's surprise at looking up at Ali.

Maybe not that important, but I think he would have had trouble with a well-conditioned 6 ft 7.5 in Vitali.

Liston being surprised does not mean he was upset or intimidated by the height difference.
But Ali was near his prime, Liston a bit past it & at a stylistic disadvantage.
Both Ali & Williams are usually listed at 6'3", but you can see both also listed as low as 6'2".
There have been tons of threads describing Ali's height, usually the consensus is it was rounded up.
On a youtube video you can see him describing himself as 6'2", where he is impressed with Clint Eastwood at 6'4".
Somebody here has said Dundee said this was his height, but I am guessing + 1/2" may be most accurate.

At any rate, as you can see when they fought each other-if anything Ali stood taller in his style, Cleveland lurching forward-they are virtually indistinguishable in height.

I think Toney with his style would be a difficult matchup for Vitali. I agree with the Ring on this

Liston fought a few tall guys I don't see why Ali's height would be a problem.
    DeJohn
    Williams
    Valdes
    Hunter
    Wepner
    Clark
    Zech
    McMurray

    Talent was the problem.

    Baby Jake Matlala...

Klit's reach would be useless and Baby Jake just might be able to win a points decision by sticking & moving constantly... repeated Punches to the gut still Point Up!

terrible match up for the Giants.

I think Toney style and counter punching would not work at all with the range Vitali preferred to operated behind a long reach and towering height. Both facts would make it tough for the diminutive 5'10" 72 reach " Toney. Matched vs. an active puncher who moved around the ring and had good defense ( where was he ever hit by a combination? ) Toney would catch a beating. He could not even out box Sam Peter...twice. Vitali clowned the same man, not losing a round. What makes you think this such a difficult match up for Vitali? I like to read that. I think James would get the 313 beaten out of him. Too bad this fight didn't happen.

    The link does not work.
Toney is real life likely was 5' 9".
Either way, he would be overmatched against Vitali.
The size, & however skilled Toney was, even with PEDs, he was a "pock them off here & there" guy at HW.
    Not on this level.

Toney would be out gunned, out reached, out powered, out punched and out thought! And his chin would be tested in ways he could not imagine. The upper limits of his chin will be tested and I say would fail. Too bad this fight didn't happen. The Toney fans that dislike the Klitschko's would be silent I tell you. I guess having fought Peter will do for Toney. We know the results and Vitali for Toney would be a nightmare.

Records mean nothing to me along with % of total rounds won, when discussing a fighter. The two best Vitali fought, beat him. Lewis was fat old and in his last fight. Byrd had all kinds disadvantages like power size reach, etc.

When I say Vitali was not a good boxer, I mean in reference to the ATGs, not his opposition.

Pay attention to how very average fighters beat Vitalis's best wins

Peters - beaten by Eddie Chambers
Past prime Sanders- beaten in his prime by Rahman
Arroela- battered by Bermane Stiverne twice
Hide - Stopped in two rounds by Joseph Chingangu

Joe Joyce , AJ and Wilder would beat those guys no problem. Who else did Vitali beat? Nobody of note.

Let's be honest Hide's claim to fame as a Heavyweight was beating a 11-1 Michael Bentt, who is arguably one of the worst Heavyweight title holders in history, who lucked out with a freak win over Tommy Morrison. And then beating a 40 year old Tony Tucker who was completely shot, who was 2-3 in his last 3 fights being stopped by Bruce Seldon, and losing to Orlin Norris, Henry Akinwande. God knows how Hide vs Tucker were allowed to fight for a vacated belt.

Hide was down about 100 times vs Riddick Bowe when he fought him 6 years prior to Vitali, Hide was really a blown up Cruiserweight who lucked out as a Heavyweight. Somehow winning WBO title twice in freak occurrences good for him, but he was not a durable or top Heavyweight in my view.

Toney is widely considered a master boxer, Vitali is going to "out-think" him?

Your Vitali love has blinded you a bit, because that is so inconceivable.

When will people learn that illogical, outrageous claims make one's statements less credible?
