Yes, ****ing Mike Tyson. And why is Ali on such a list, his technique was garbage, he didn't even know how to throw a proper uppercut. He relied on his speed and reflexes, that's not technique.
From that list in order according to me : Joe Louis Holyfield Ali Homles Usyk Lewis Fury Frazier Klitschko Dempsey
Lol. The "Phantom Punch" and the "Rope-a-Dope strategy" could be enough to put him in the 10 best fighters ever for ever as to technique. No HW on the Planet would have made better than him against two monsters like Liston and Foreman. Plus must be considered his unique way to dodge blows, his exceptional footwork, his jab and the fact he could land bunches of blows in few seconds often from impossible angles...and other. Isn't that enough, sir?
If his technique was solid he’d never have had to resort to a rope a dope. His mistake was leaving Archie Moore, he’d have had been fed a fifth as many punches opposed to relying on his on the fly style.
Best punching technique? Joe Louis Best footwork technique? Ali or Usyk Best defensive techniques? Ali, Holmes and allowing for his height and reach (I.e. not best defense overall, but best technique given his size meant he was compelled to adopt a style not conducive to being a great defensive fighter), Frazier. Arguably Wlad too, if the determining factor is effectiveness alone, and so you include his clinching, allied to his range control.
Another vote for Louis from me. Sometimes even the most technically proficient boxers aren’t always aesthetically pleasing - but The Bomber was, very much so and without any impractical, superfluous, flashy moves. Excellent for preservation of stamina. Of course Ali didn’t do everything by the book - but I think whatever he did lack in strict technical terms is often exaggerated. Relatively, Ali fought very close to the book in the first Liston fight - but in other fights, Ali was even more extravagant in his moves - but that doesn’t cancel the other, fundamentally sound moves that he also practiced. At a level below the fighters in the discussion, I would say that Zora Folley had a very technically sound style - he idolised and modelled himself on Joe Louis I believe. It was interesting to see some of Zora’s no nonsense, by the book technique and punches gain him a few notable successes against the uber extravagant Ali.
