Somewhat impressively he picks the Elli version of Shavers to wage war.

I think Earnie has the better talent, quicker, hit harder, stayed on balance better. Earnie just faced better fighters which ended exposing his shortcomings, one of which is also an asset...

Earnie started his attack from the get, took the early initiative and often won the fight early. Thus, he jumps on Max early and finishes him. Max tended to take his precious time getting serious about his attack. He wouldn't get that time here.

Earnies head does look boastfully full when you can’t see the friar’s patch on top.

Jesus, look at the arms on him!

No doubt, a certain someone will try to suggest that to be a “fruity” observation - in all projection of themselves.

The Ellis fight? Isn’t that the one where a single Shavers’ uppercut left Jimmy on the deck, literally vomiting? At least that’s my “vague” recollection. :)

I agree. I also felt he was just flat out shot against Cooney (his ranking was a joke). I've always thought a '73 Norton would've beaten both of them. Foreman faced the best version of Norton (or closest to it. I think the best version was the one in the Ali rematch. Confidence was at an all time high after their first win and he didn't suffer any devastating defeat yet) and demolished him so their's not much of an argument for Norton beating Foreman.

Think it plays out similar to the Galento bout. Make no mistake Galento could bang so could Schmeling. Max could take a punch and w his stamina he’s gonna wear down Shavers for a KO 6-10. The clown prince for the win

    Random side bar:

I think Lyle vs Shavers is perhaps close to the greatest ATG slugfest.

It does seem to be an underrated fight somewhat - or at least oversighted. Maybe it’s due to the less than perfect quality (thank goodness we have it all).

That fight is another credit to Earnie though he went down in defeat. It screams brutality from go to whoa.

To beat that Shavers, you not only needed good whiskers but also a huge heart and determination - as Lyle clearly upheld.

Maxie B. might take it for a few rounds - but it would still hurt and be very disconcerting - and Earnie could ply it for 4-5 rds, hammering for all he is/was worth.

Of course a single, well placed right hand bomb from Baer could have Earnie rocking and reeling and better set for follow up from the less skill Baer - I just see it as less likely.

Are there any clearer versions of Lyle vs Shavers than the best we’ve seen on YouTube?

I was at the fight. My hands still hurt from clapping. crowd went nuts when Lyle won---moreso than any other fight I have attended.

I talked about this earlier in the thread but I was always very impressed how Shavers took Lyle's shots. If his chin was half as bad, as many here suspect, he would've been gone a lot earlier. Shavers' chin is very undersold imo.

He sure went down bad at the end though. Easily could have been a ruined fighter. They did a really good job rebuilding earnie after that.

Honestly, his lack of endurance led to his downfall more than anything imo (as well as bad luck, had he knocked Lyle down any earlier in the round fight's over imo)

Big meaty FRUITY arms!!!!! Fruity like that honey on Sonny and that forge on George!!!! Oh and all that heave on Cleve!!!! Gosh i wish people would say such things about poor ole ME!!!!

Ellis had his brief moment but man o' man it didn't end well. What hope did he have against arms like that.

Shavers told him pre fight i'm a gonna knock you out. Jimmy said you and what army pal? Earnie said me and this army and that army as he pointed to both fruity bicep muscles.

Well this simply depends whether Baer could land the big one because overall I think Shavers is the better fighter and despite Baer’s chin I think Shavers can stop him.
It’s always difficult to pick a winner when you have 2 punchers like this, but overall I’ll go with Shavers I just think he’s better.

Agree Cec. Sometimes matches between big punchers can be problematic to assess. I didn't see Foreman vs Lyle in real time but I'm sure even as that fight was in progress, particularly after both men had hit the deck, pundits still weren't sure which man would ultimately be left standing.

Young George looked gone for all money after the second knockdown - but somehow scraped himself up from the canvas, leaving a pool of blood where his head laid just a few seconds before.
