You can add Mohamed Elomar to that list. He turned his back on his boxing career to become an actual Isis fighter, happily posing with the severed heads of Syrian soldiers who died battling them. Him and his brother were grubs even before this but he showed what an evil, depraved, imbecile he truly was. He was eventually taken out in a drone strike and the world immediately became a better place once this turd was blown to pieces.
Idi Amin was a light-heavyweight boxer. He was the worst I can think of. Unless Stalin was a golden gloves or something
I would agree however; Arum never actually murdered anyone (that we know of). That pushes Don over the top. As for picking other than King: I'd say Edwin Valero and Carlos Monzon are a tie.
Ayala, scumbag though he was, had some real skill and probably would've given Duran a good, tough fight - but I think Roberto wins if they had gone at it.
Well, it's certainly not Don King. King made 100 fighters millionaires for the first time. He created more millionaires than most global companies do and put on some of the greatest events in the sport's history. Some of the biggest fights in boxing history never would've happened if not for King. And a lot of fighters still think King was the sport's best promoter. Robert Garcia, Joshua's last trainer, being one recent former King fighter who said he always got paid well by King. One not mentioned yet is Rick "Elvis" Parker. Parker made no one rich. He added nothing to the spot. He primarily staged fixed fights. He poisoned one of his fighters who wouldn't take a dive and was shot to death for it. And, had Bert Cooper beaten Holyfield, Parker would've controlled the heavyweight title. Boxing dodged a bullet there. Parker accomplished nothing and only caused damage.
If you want to read about the dregs of humanity read The Black Lights by Thomas Hauser and Boxing Babylon by Nigel Collins. Black Lights has a whole lot about King and also the shenanigans of the WBC/WBA while Babylon focuses on individual fighters including Monzon and Liston's sad story.
I've read both. Black Lights' biggest gripes about King were King trying to get Billy Costello to defend his title against an ancient Saoul Mamby, and Costello was too afraid to do it. But Sulaiman forced him to. And Costello won easily. And Don King controlled most of the major heavyweights, so heavyweights had to sign with King to get title shots ... which is basically what every goddamn promoter has done for the last 40 years. Basically every terrible "promoter thing" King was accused of is what every grinning, polished promoter does today. But nobody writes books bashing them. They just regurgitate the same tired "Don King was awful" garbage. Oscar Bonavena's manager (who was Bernando Mercado's manager, too), who ran the Mustang Ranch in Nevada and had Oscar gunned down, was another piece of work. Joe Conforti was his name. In addition to having Oscar gunned down, Conforti had some of his fighters work as male prostitutes at the ranch. I believe Vinnie Curto copped to doing it. And was it Blinky Palermo who had guys beat trainer Ray Arcel in the head with a pipe and drive him out of boxing for 20 years, because Ray tried to start a boxing group to compete with the International Boxing Club? Can you imagine how big of a dick you have to be to beat Ray Arcel in the head with a pipe? Lots of bad guys in the sport's history. And even today. See Daniel Kinahan. There's an international warrant out for his arrest.
read Babylon, might have to check out the other... I know too much about these POS Managers & Promoters from many sources I have known throughout the years... I don't know how people can just Black Heartedly screw people over without conscience. Then again we needn't look much further than the Work Place either. PIGS!
James Butler has TWO COMPLETELY SEPARATE REASONS why he would make a top 15 (or, should we say bottom 15) of boxing's scumbags - one inside the ring, another outside. Ernst Mateen, also garbage. Carlos Manuel Baldomir, utterly disgusting. Eric Morel, yet another diddler. Unfortunately the list goes on, and on...
I never tire of watching the pain, shock and bewildered aggrievement on his face in that clip of the parking lot brawl. "Larry Holmes kicked meh and heh punched meh!! "
