A thread to discuss some of the great fights in boxing history that have some footage (highlights or extended highlights only) available either online or known of somewhere, including information or just speculation about where the full film might be. Please post your examples here.
A few to start things off: Joe Louis v Billy Conn 1, 1941 (heavyweight) Around 20 minutes of good quality highlights. The complete fight must exist in the archives somewhere but I’ve never seen it posted online. This content is protected Tony Zale v Rocky Graziano 2, 1947 (middleweight) 10 mins of near unwatchable footage filmed unofficially from the stands. Better than nothing…but not much better. This content is protected Rafael Herrera v Rodolfo Martinez 2, 1973 (Bantamweight) About 6 minutes of decent quality footage that is enough to show this one was a beauty. This content is protected Romeo Anaya v Arnold Taylor 1, 1973 (Bantamweight) Nearly 13 minutes of poor quality but watchable footage that lives up to the fight legend. A longer thread on this film is here: https://www.boxingforum24.com/threads/romeo-anaya-v-arnold-taylor-1-1973-12m-49-secs.697447/ This content is protected
Carl Thompson vs Sebastiaan Rothmann The fight is often mentioned among great obscure fights, but BBC - like They were often doing it at the time - only showed the fight from round 4 on - so I still did not see it. I'm assuming that somewhere in the BBC archives - lays the complete version and I hope that one day someone decides to show it.
There used to be one round of Ray Leonard vs. Randy Shields, shot from the stands on a handheld camera of some sort, floating around but I can’t find it now. Not one of the greatest fights of all time, but I’d love to se it in its entirety. It was IIRC Ray’s second fight against a ranked welter (following Mayweather) and Randy apparently gave Ray a bit of trouble although not enough that anyone ever claimed Shields deserved the verdict. Still, an important fight in the evolution of Leonard and it’s still amazing to me that as much of Ray’s career that was televised this fight somehow took place with no TV on a Friday night when surely any of the networks would have paid handsomely for it.
There can be only one. This content is protected Just leading with right hands to the body against maybe the hardest puncher in the division above. Worth noting this is the upscaled version, it's clearer.
the Best thing about Footage like this, is that it Shows NORMAL Fighting, Proving that "Yesteryears Fighters were just fine, though they did it every other week and for years & years..." anyway, so again it Proves, that POOR Quality Film is the Problem and NOT the fighters from those past era's.
Not the greatest fights in terms of action but definitely interesting considering the quality of the fighters. This content is protected This content is protected
I enjoy watching Locche too. The audacity of the casual nature in which he moved his head to avoid punches is appealing to me. Incidentally, I'm 3 episodes into Monzon on Netflix. Locche made an appearance in the 3rd episode and at a time before Monzon became world champ, jealous of Locche's higher profile, he swung and missed 3 punches at him in a bar. I'd never read that Monzon had a problem with Locche and would be interested as to what extent, if any, the way it is portrayed in the series is true.
It would be handy to have a database detailing exactly what footage/rounds are still available - then you at least know if you’ve seen all that is actually available - and are not trying to chase ghost footage/rounds. Louis vs Uzcudun is very poor quality also - and it’s like a hard core porn movie edited down to a soft version for television. One moment both fighter are upright - then it “jumps” to Uzcudun on the deck - completely missing the all important “money shot”, lol, at least that’s the cr*ppy version I’ve seen. I mean, who wants to see what was reported by many to be the hardest single punch Louis ever laid on an opponent?
]Is Monzon any good?[/QUOTE] I assume you're asking about the series, rather than the boxer;-) I'm only 3 episodes in, but so far so good. It switches between 2 times - 1) Starting as a teenager and episode 3 ends with him celebrating the news of his title shot at Benvenuti; and 2) The events after killing his 2nd wife. It doesnt focus heavily on his boxing career, but there bits that are interesting from a boxing perspective.
