I am so grateful to have witnessed the days of Roy Jones Jr in his prime. It wont be witnessed again

I know people will bring up once in a generation superstars such as:

    Jordan
    Lebron
    Brady
    Bonds
    Moss
    Bolt
    Messi
    Phelps
    Serena
    Nadal
    Woods

I was fortunate to have witnessed all of them in their absolute prime. But for me, all of the individuals listed above will eventually have someone come along that are faster, stronger, quicker and overall better than them at their own respective sport. Some of the names listed will take much longer than others like Lebron, Bonds, Bolt, Messi and Woods but It's just a matter of time.

I can't say the same for Roy Jones Jr. At his absolute peak, he had an aura of invincibility where he was literally untouchable. Watching him fight live in person when I was a young man was by the far the most amazing display of athleticism I have ever seen. It's one thing to watch highlights of him fight, but to actually watch him in person was truly flawless. Fighters literally seemed like they were moving in slow motion and there was just nothing they could do about it, no matter how hard they tried.

I was in the crowd up close when he put both of his hands behind his back against Glen Kelly and dropped him with one punch and casually stepped out of the way while Kelly was in mid air falling to the canvas.. To this day, I've never seen someone move that quick. You'd have to have been there to have fully appreciated how awesome it was.

The best way I can describe Roy's athleticism is the scene in the movie Troy where Hector and his men on horseback are charging the Temple at the beach. Achilles tells his right hand man to warn the men, but before he does, he tells him to give him his spear. Achilles throws it perfectly at one of the Trojans neck knocking him off the horse right next to Hector. Hector looks in disbelief. Later on in the movie, Hector tells his wife that in all of the battles he has been in, that he witnessed a spear throw that he's never seen before and that it was an impossible throw.

That is exactly how I would describe Roy's gifted athleticism. I don't believe it will be duplicated ever again.

You truly don't appreciate things like this until they are gone.

No man could say they didn't get their fair share of amazement when they bought the ticket.

Generational talent. Probably how people felt when they saw SRR coming up as a WW.

I'd like to put in Mike Tyson. He broke the mold for a 5'10 HW. Noone can duplicate it and not even imitate his style.

Say what you will about Naz, he brought it and brought it in style.

That era of unchecked PED usage won't be witnessed again either.

    Y'all musta forgot!

Prime RJJ was a truly phenomenal fighter and a physical specimen that could do anything he wanted in the ring. Really wish he had retired after John Ruiz.

Once in a generation, maybe life time mix of reflexes athleticism and boxing IQ. Yea he was probably sauced, but in an era like others have said where it was basically the wild west and everyone and their grandmother was using PEDs uncheckex, he stood so far above what the rest of the field was doing it was very impressive.

Just imagine if he had retired in 2003 after winning the WBA Heavyweight belt from John Ruiz ! But Roy was a fighter and ignored numerous Doctors/Sports Scientists etc who all told him he would never be the same again after putting the extra weight on for the fight up at Heavyweight. They were proven right as Roy was simply never the same fighter again after beating Ruiz in his 49th fight.Roy fought on a further 15 years after his greatest win and we never even saw a glimpse of his former self as he simply never resembled anything of his glory days as well as him suffering some nasty stoppages .

I don't see how that's possible in an era of stringent qualitative random testing. Sure there is corruption (e.g. Clenelo) but most have to play by the rules. There was no strict drug testing policies for the majority of Jones' career. I doubt we'll ever see another boxer with 6 to 1 T/E ratio like Jones in the Richard Hall fight.
