So name me the fighters that Rooney has worked with? Rooney got alot of mileage off of being with Cus and honestly its the only reason why he didnt end up in jail when he really should have been put in jail.

If you had a prospect and could only choose from either Teddy or Kevin who would you choose?

The roadmap that the D'Amato, Cayton & Jacobs team layed out was to keep Tyson fighting every few weeks so as to give him as little off time as possible so he wouldn't get himself in trouble.......Those are their words not mine......& even then he managed a long list of skirmishes that resulted in the team having to pay people off to avoid reputation damaging lawsuits. They knew back then what we know now in hindsight, that Tyson was an accident waiting to happen & they needed to achieve & earn as much as possible as soon as possible before the wheels fell off.

By 95-96, Tyson would have retired already, undefeated, with a record of 50 and 0.

    This is a good point.

Even losing to them would have been better than losing to Douglas when he did.

In that scenario it simply becomes an era of giants.

Depends on their age and style. My point was Teddy and Tyson weren't going to work out because of the incident brought up in that clip.

Yep, there was a documentary in the 90s where I think I heard Cayton saying that very thing - the Tyson Plan was simple: fight, back in the gym; fight, back in the gym; repeat until he retires at 30 as the richest HW champion in history (and obviously making everyone attached to him wealthier too). It was a necessity because he didn't know what to do with himself if he wasn't kept busy - trouble was an inevitable by product of boredom, which is how it played out regardless. I think Cus gave Mike all the tools he needed to be a great fighter, but maybe neglected the tools Tyson needed to become a functioning adult.

Cus knew he wasn’t long for the world and his personal greed to have another champion led him to cut corners.

Short-term payoff but not good for the long term for the fighter himself.

I don't think that much would've changed honestly. Rooney wasn't teaching him anything new and he had financial and substance abuse issues that were becoming an increasing distraction. Cayton and Jacobs wanted to get rid of him. As others have mentioned Tyson was being fast-tracked to the title before he could fully develop psychologically and socially to the pressures of stardom/celebrity.

I always thought it funny when Rooney trained Pazienza & Paz would start a round out doing the peek a boo head weaving thing. Then he’d go nuts and revert back to his regular style.

Rooney knew one style but that one style probably fit Tyson best. I think the bottom line is could peak Rooney trained Tyson solve the problems the next wave of fighters would present. Would be able to deal with the power & size of Bowe & Lewis. How does he attack a Holyfield who has absolutely no fear of him. Those boxers were a bit more lively than Berbick, Tubbs, & Thomas.

It was beauty that killed the beast, not a trainer. Like Tommey Morrison, his dick led him to disaster.
We have to remember Tyson's background as a poor, molested street kid who didn't even have
dreams until Cus came along. Once Mike hit the big time, he started screwing himself into oblivion.
We all heard the stories comeing out of Japan before the Douglas bout, that he was pounding geisha
girls like a mad samauri. Then he marries a beautiful movie star and she ripped his heart out and
totally messed up his head even more so.

It was beauty that killed the beast.

I've said the following about Tyson's very impressive looking rise -- replace him with a young hungry Lennox Lewis who has Emmanuel Steward from the beginning. Same exact fight path. Like Lewis wouldn't walk through the entire division that Tyson did, also with a lot of early fight KOs?

Or, let's say that Holyfield took up weight lifting young and started out his pro career with the 205lb physique he had at the time of his first fight with Bowe. Like he wouldn't wreck Tyson's entire lineup on the way to the title?

Tyson was a special fighter and great. But it's all a little distorted because he was the only true big fish during his rise.

You know, it might have actually been better off for their management to set aside an escort fund, and have vetted escort girls waiting for them every day when they got done with training. Might have avoided the crazy partying and bad spouses.
