So recently I was debating about Golovkin/Hopkins resume. And the topic of Jacobs, Holmes, got brought up. Which is one of Hopkins and Golovkin's best wins at that weight.

Overall they're similar level but I rate Holmes a bit higher, and I think he would out point Jacobs. I know this is a bit of an odd match up, but I'm genuinely interested to see if you guys see it the same way as me.

Close fight 7-5 either way. I give Holmes slight edge.

I should probably start up by saying that I only saw Keith Holmes's fight from 1998 on, I think first Cherifi fight was first fight of his that I saw, then his last couple title defences, Hopkins unification and final chapter at 154. I think it's enough to make a judgement, but if He had some of his best performances earlier than that, I wouldn't know. Jacobs I was following all throughout his career.

Saying that - I think Daniel Jacobs had more to his game, was more athlethic and versatile fighter - and I consider him quite clearly the better fighter of the two.
Not sure if He'd beat Holmes head-to-head though, I never saw him against tall southpaw so I'm not sure how He'd handle the match-up. I'd favor him though, I think He was bigger and stronger, with more physicality. Holmes was able to drop down to 154 in his 30s, while Jacobs was never below 160.

Yeah, there's a substantial size distance here, assuming we're comparing Holmes against the likely 180lbs+ version of Jacobs that fought GGG.

Holmes was 145lbs as late as age 25. He was 157lbs a couple of times when defending his WBC MW belt, so clearly not a big weight drainer at that weight. He briefly moved down to 154lbs aged 35 & 36. My guess is we're talking about the Jacobs who fought GGG being 20lbs heavier than the best MW version of Holmes.

Weight isn't everything, but Jacobs looks almost as skilled, more explosive, a harder puncher relative to their respective sizes, as well as likely much bigger and stronger. Holmes was a good fighter, but I'd make Jacobs a clear favourite, prime for prime at MW, with a weigh in early the day before the fight and no rehydration clause.

I never saw the Welterweight version of Holmes. He was actually 1 inch taller than Paul Williams.
From what I remember, He was a vegan - which probably was one of the reasons He never developmed much muscle mass on one hand, but also was able to control his weight and even drop down effectively in his 30s.

Interesting matchup. Holmes was a damn good fighter and was much better than he got credit for. I could see him beating Jacobs for sure. Holmes was the superior boxer between him Jacobs and while Jacobs was the better puncher, nobody ever slept Holmes and he was in with some legit bangers like Quincy Taylor and Roman Karmazin. I see Holmes by decision.

    Jacobs>Holmes and Joppy

splitting fights with Cherifi and losing every second against Hopkins isn’t the same level as Jacobs

Too be fair, Getting dominated by Hopkins isn't really that bad of a blemish. Trinidad, Tarver, Pavlik, Cloud, Joppy etc. All pretty much lost every second against him.

Holmes was managed by Carl King Don's son & he stole the WBC Middleweight title from Quincy Taylor.
Its a long story but here goes. Quincy was pulling fo a title shot for ages & no luck. He was headlining a Black Tie affair at the Anatole in Dallas Jose Sulaiman was a guest. I forget who Quincy's opponent was but when Quincy came to the ring his knee was strapped up tight. Turns out he was playing hoops with some kids day before the fight & messed up his AC ligament. Despite this Quincey knocked his outclassed opponent out easily
Suliaman came in the dressing room after & said' Whats up with your knee Quincy I can get you a title shot against Julian Jackson do you want it ?? Quincy wasn't about to say no. Fight was set up but Quincy didn't have time to get his knee fixed he fought & knocked out Julian with a bum knee He was champ!!!!!!
He got his knee fixed & suddenly a short while later the WBC demanded Quincy fight Keith Holmes or be stripped. He told me his knee was numb & not ready but he went ahead with the fight. Holmes caught him with a shot & knocked him down . He got up & Holmes thought he was hurt & charged in throwing punches few were landing when suddenly ref Richard Steele stepped in & stopped the fight. They robbed him Steele was Don King's come to ref. !!!
Don said to Quincy "Sign with me I'll get you a title shot soon" He never did Quincy basically retired he only fought once more KO'd an unbeaten 20 odd fighter. Another good fighter robbed by the system .
B Hop was on the same card & he agreed Quincy had been robbed & said " Don't worry Quince I'll get him for ya" He kept his word too. It was on one of Tysons fights they were on the undercard of

I liked Quincy Taylor quite a bit. He sure was a heavy handed dude and a lot of fun to watch. As for the story you told, the King family has notoriously screwed over many fighters but I disagree when It comes to the result of the Taylor vs Holmes fight. Taylor was legitimately hurt by a right hand and Holmes landed several unanswered shots on Taylor. If I remember correctly Holmes was slightly ahead at the time of the stoppage. Taylor may have been hurt going into the fight but I don't see why the Kings would have rather had Holmes as champion over Taylor. Holmes was nowhere near as exciting or marketable as Taylor was.

It's a shame Taylor never got a rematch. He was a talented fighter.

Jeez man Carl King was Holmes manager. Don's step son. He wanted Holmes as WBC champ but didn't fancy having to fight Julian Jackson to try to get it. Suliaman had been harassed for overlooking Quincy for a shot. He saw he was injured that night in Dallas & his problem was solved. Quincy & Julian were both punchers that could take you out with one shot. Quincy obliged. He said it was a decent shot but not hard enough to warrant the fight being stopped. We watched a tape together in slow motion Holmes threw lots but no bad shots landed Quincy said he was fine trying to lure Holmes into making a mistake, I believe him
Richard Steele was Don King's ref that was obvious. I know the late great Curtis Cokes went crazy at Steele he knew they'd been robbed Steele just leered at him

I see GGG and Canelo dominating him after warning up. I could see him as a slight favorite over D-Chenko and Quillin though. Probably 1-1 or 1-0-1 if he had to fight them.

Are we talking about Holmes or BHOP? GGG and Canelo wipe the floor with Holmes but I will take BHOP over both of those guys without a seconds though. Holmes was a good fighter but I have GGG and Canelo as great and BHOP as a generational talent.

I said the King's because both Don and his son Carl were know for being shitbags that screwed their fighters over. Tons of stories about both of them and I have no doubt that Taylor was back-doored by them. No disrespect meant towards Taylor who I hold in high regard I ust recall his loss to Holmes as legit. The King family had a few good middleweights around that time period that had their careers **** on by those two. Maseleno Masoe, Randy Griffin and Travis Simms were all guys that were super talented but never got a big fight.

I’m talking about Holmes. I don’t him being able to match Jacobs’ results.
