Is Tyson Fury still a prime fighter?

How do you assess Fury’s current state

  1. Just entering his prime

  2. In his prime

  3. Past his prime

It’s difficult to judge for sure but my sense is his absolute peak was Wilder II.

Does a “past his prime” Fury school and stop the feather fisted cruiser who is supposed to be an ATG? What would that say for Fury’s legacy?

Tyson Fury has never needed to use his full power level.

The closest he came was in the 2nd Wilder fight but after 4 rounds Wilder was so beaten Fury didn't need to step it up.

Super Saiyan Fury will be seen in April against a midget.

I think he’s lost a little speed and maybe footwork but I think he puts his punches together better now and they have more meat in them.

Will say the same, but just wondering if he lost so or it's just because of his style change (like he still has it, but don't use it). But he still is in a top shape, just need to face more top opponents to prove it and to have a good legacy.

Further on in his prime, definitely not past it and if was entering his prime then we'd be on the verge of seeing the greatest heavyweight ever.

Outboxer: 27 year old, 24-0 “2FAST” Fury: lighter (256 lbs), slightly smaller target, faster hands, feet, reflexes, more agile, better co-ordinated, greater balance, less worn, superior engine in a less physical fight

Boxer-puncher-mauler: 31 year old, 29-0-1 “The Gypsy King” Fury: heavier (273 lbs), better strength, wrestling, power, punch resistance, fully physically and mentally mature, more experienced, smarter, more skilled

His absolute peak as an outboxer was Wlad, his absolute peak as a boxer-puncher-mauler was Wilder 2. It was immediately apparent in Wilder 3 that Fury wasn't as active or sharp with his head movement, upper body movement or feinting. However, he'd been out of the ring for a while, was carrying too much fat and likely wasn't as focused considering he made relatively easy work of Wilder in the 2nd fight. He was excellent in the Whyte fight but Whyte is slow of foot and isn't a pressure fighter. I thought Chisora 2 was a better performance than Chisora 3, though mainly because Chisora had not looked good since Parker 1. Fury took minimal head damage in either fight, Chisora wasn't prepared for Fury to box southpaw in their 2nd fight and Fury was likely more focused for 2/1 underdog Chisora 2 than 20/1 underdog Chisora 3. I'd say Fury is slightly past prime but it's still a very good version.

Usyk may also be slightly past prime: he beat Joshua by a wider margin in their first fight. It's hard to say with Usyk though because he moved up to heavyweight so late. He was younger and fresher against Chisora than in either Joshua fight but didn't set the world alight.

If Fury stopped Usyk it would be hugely impressive: no one has stopped him in 376 career fights, amateur and pro. No one has even dropped him with a headshot, so far as we know. No cruiserweight had ever clearly beaten a SHW with Joshua's credentials prior to Usyk, let alone as the B-side, let alone twice. If Fury schooled Usyk it would also be hugely impressive; there's never been a cruiser/heavy southpaw pointfighter as good as Usyk in boxing history (look at what a green Wlad did to Byrd by contrast).

I expect Fury to beat Usyk but he's a hard stylistic matchup for anyone. Just winning would be a major feather in Fury's cap.

I don’t think him or Usyk are in their primes anymore tbh. I was watching the Usyk Huck fight the other day and he was noticeably better, which makes his wins over AJ even more impressive seeing as he was 35. I don’t think Fury is in his prime but he’s not as far off it, the problems with his elbows etc are a bit of a worry for him though, I’m not sure how many hard training camps he has left, and Usyk for that matter, which is why we need undisputed next!

A better point of comparison is Hunter as he wasn't well past his best when Usyk fought him as Huck was and Hunter went on to have a more relevant version of Povetkin as a mutual opponent with AJ. Assuming that AJ is better than Hunter (which the Povetkin fights clearly suggest) Usyk's performance in Joshua 1 looked like a prime performance; 6'5.5, 240 lbs AJ didn't pose Usyk much/any more trouble than 6'1, 199 lbs Hunter did.

I think he's in his prime but like others have said there's multiple versions. Perhaps another version will emerge against usyk. Either way I love watching him fight.

Fury's soul is protected by god himself

Wilder has made a pact with the devil and despite this tremendous power of evil he still could not take an untrained Tyson Fury. He is the god of war. The titan of titans. The Gypsy King.

I think his prime was probably Wilder 2 and before.

Wilder 3 he looked heavy rumors of problems training. He looked slower of foot VS Whyte but it didn't matter as Dylan feet were encased in lead. Still if Usyk wins take nothing away from him Fury certainly isn't shot. He has plenty to give and big fights to make if he wants he might just have to adjust to being more of a fighter than a boxer.

Physically Fury is past his prime, however mental aspects of his game will continue to improve with age.
