How good was GGG under Abel Sanchez and should he have not left him? Not sure why fighters leave trainers after 1 loss, similar with AJ and Rob
Sanchez was better than Banks, obviously. But just like Banks he was far too happy when a certain opponent 'beat' his fighter. Golovkin should have left him but choosing Banks was ridiculous. Should have just let his brother train him. People overstate what these trainers actually do when it's obvious that they basically luck out getting exceptional fighters and make a name for themselves that way. Shane McGuigan is the obvious example. So he ended up with Frampton, Taylor and Groves, even Haye for a while. These were all exceptional fighters who were going to be at the top level with any trainer. Groves even did well with that Irish amateur hippy coach who wouldn't stop smoking dope and came to work in his flip-flops.
Golovkin was obviously more effective under Sanchez. I think Sanchez was over compensating to Canelo and the Mexican fans since Canelo pushed Golovkin to the limit, complementing him. I think that rubbed GGG the wrong way, plus GGG needed a change.
Boxing people don't really think highly of Sanchez as a trainer- he is widely considered to be a guy that has ridden on the work done by others in developing fighters. Very few boxing guys like him. Boxing money guys really like him. I was with a guy that was ranked #14 in the world. The money guys wanted him to go with Abel and he jumped to #7 without fighting another fight. To be honest, I like Abel. Back in 1995 I sat with him at the fights in LA, not knowing who he was, and had a great time. Good guy. I later saw him in Big Bear when he was training Fran Botha for the Lewis fight and, after watching them train for 2 days, I thought that he was trying to get Botha killed. I don't know what he could have done differently, given how 'not so good' Botha was, but he was sending him on a suicide mission.
Of course he was better under Sanchez, but I'm not sure Sanchez actually did anything to make GGG better. GGG was already good, and used to be a fabulous counter puncher, something he used less and less with time. GGG mostly needed a trainer who could speak english for him.
I can agree with your comment on the trainers, Yeah Golovkin only took in hopeless Banks because of his association with fellow Klitschko brothers & nothing more, probably thought about getting other trainers for a try out but instead rejected it & listened to Loeffler as GGG knew it is mostly on him & his experience with him boxing for years, so yeah.
What you said, plus the fact Abel keeps it all in house & decides himself to not only be the fighters trainers, but also their strength & conditioners, dietitians while they live at his place, Perhaps he should stick to the training part & leave the rest to the other individuals, seems to be controlling & maybe for financial gain, plus spread's himself out too much which i'm assuming affects his main job which is training.
The fighter that went to work with him said that Abel spent very little time teaching him anything. He said that most of what he learned he learned from GGG.
No surprise, i really believe Golovkin got burned out with all that high altitude training & sleeping up there at big bear.
Because GGG got the DAZN deal it would've meant Sanchez would get $8 million from Ggg so lofler got cheapie Banks...IMOIts a pity he couldn't have gone back to Wild Card but I understand GGG had trouble deciphering Freddie Roach's instructions hence Able...
Yup, plus Roach hasn't been any good since 2010ish as a real coach anyways, but good to see him keep on going for his health at least, Not sure any fighter has made any difference under him, it's just like free promotion at this point.
I think Able was a double edge sword, he generated alot of publicity, and helped stir controversy, bragged about Golovkin alot, but it also put alot of pressure on GGG as well. Mexican style was a great marketing tool but GGG wanted the freedom to fight any way he saw fit, forward backwards, side ways, what ever. The fact that Golovkin boxed a master class in their 2nd Canelo fight and some took that as Canelo won because of that, is an example. You cant fight every fighter the same way. It was close, but GGG found a way to win. I can tell you this, GGG needed alot more of the Sanchez mexican style aggression in the 3rd fight though.
