This is 1970 Liston though. I would wonder as the rounds wore on would Bugner up the pace and Liston gets worn down. You never know with Bugner.
I agree it s an interesting one. Of course we have to see which head Bugner wears going in. He can't afford to be silly or to laid back, other wise Liston takes his head off. Maybe, just maybe, Joe catches him at the right time. Imagine that shocker, and Liston losing a decision to Joe Bugner!!
It's certainly possible. Liston looked good on film in his twilight years against Wepner and Martin, but he was still fairly slow and old. Bugner at his best might have been able to pull it off at that stage. Would have been his biggest win by far.
As already well stated, Bugner really is your classic “Depends on which one turns up on the night of the fight ” type of boxer. If he focused on survival - he might sacrifice too many early rounds but I suspect Liston would fade somewhat in the later rounds for Joe to step it up - IF Joe fully seized the opportunity to do so - of course that’s a big IF. The other question perhaps is, could Bugner stop a well tired Liston in the late rounds? Joe could bang when he had a mind to do so - but again, would he have the “mind” to turn on the aggression switch if the opportunity presented itself? I assume we’re talking a 10 rd’r?
The medics in Florida said his shoulder was injured in '64. His face sure was busted up. Kind of a Vitali v Byrd outcome without Liston being ahead on the cards.

The view on “quitting” is interesting. Some treat it as black and white. An unconditional attribute to be upheld in all circumstances. Others will allow for context - if they view the context as reasonable for mitigation. We know Ali didn’t quit against Holmes - Dundee called it. But, since it was an extreme circumstance. let’s say Ali did say “Enough is enough, I’m done!” I personally would’ve had no prob with it - and it wouldn’t make me think that prime or past prime Ali (to the point of his first retirement) would ever quit.
