I forgot all the particulars but a few things stayed with me. It was a Vince McMahon concept that turned into a fiasco. It was wrestlers against mostly journeymen boxers in boxing matches. Some of the wrestlers took it seriously and tried to box. However one of the boxers said that was to their detriment and they were better while "brawling". When they tried to box they did worse.
@McGrain @janitor Was it Langford or Johnson's dad who was a wrestler and incorporated it in his game? off hand just cant remember ..?.. Brusa was a wrestler and incorporated it in Monzon's game Mike Gibbons hell of a wrestler at the Y before he was a boxer
Joe Louis wrestled for a spell after he retired from boxing. And Floyd Mayweather whupped the 7'00" Big Show in a wrestling match.
I’ve got a mate who totally bought that Mayweather - Big Show thing. I shook my head - then he added “But there was blood….” What was it that PT Barnum said again….?
I haven’t read/heard that Johnson’s dad had any wrestling background…maybe. I haven’t read anything on Sam’s dad though. Here’s Jack in a hybrid wrestling match. I say hybrid because note the right hand Johnson lands at the beginning. Johnson ultimately gets flipped and pinned. Still pretty cool to have footage of same. Maybe the first instance of the old anchor punch - and it’s first FAIL? This content is protected
Yep, he seriously did. No dummy either. Completed Uni studies in bio mechanical engineering. Sometimes simple common sense evades the more acutely intelligent among us. Fortunately, I enjoy the best of both worlds.
I'm guessing this was one of the McMahon matches you were talking about.... This content is protected
You're talking about the Brawl For All tournament. Reportedly it was a Vince Russo idea, which he came up with because he was so fed up with John "Bradshaw" Layfield talking about how tough he was that he pitched a real toughman contest to prove it in the hopes that someone would humiliate him. Dan Severn took part but pulled out after one round because the tournament was a poorly organized mess, he didn't have anything to prove to anyone and thought continuing might damage his reputation. Ken Shamrock refused to have anything to do with it, Steve Blackman took it seriously but had to pull out with a legitimate injury sustained in training, The Godfather, Road Warrior Hawk and Savio Vega all sustainted injuries. Eventually Bart Gunn would be the unlikely victor when he beat Bob "Hardcore" Holly on point, knocked out Dr Death Steve Williams and the Godfather before knocking Bradshaw out in the final. Gunn's reward for this surprise success was to be kept off television for months and then fed to Butterbean at Wrestlemania in a brutal one round KO - because Butterbean was told to take it as a serious fight even though he offered to work with the WWE to make it more of a "sport's-entertainment" thing, and so Butterbean came to believe he'd been brought in to punish Gunn for daring to go against the WWE's plans. Butterbean actually said that Gunn made the mistake of trying to be a boxer, and if he'd tried to brawl like he had in the other fights he'd have stood a chance in a legitimate fight against him, but Butterbean knew he'd kill him in a boxing match.
There's an infamous match between Muhammed Ali and Japanese wrestling legend Antonio Inoki where Inoki was not permitted to grapple and couldn't throw a kick unless one knee was on the mat so Inoki spent pretty much the whole fight on his back kicking at Ali's legs, makign it a complete farce. Ali also had a famous confrontation with Gorilla Monsoon: This content is protected
