I was just thinking Macho Camacho fought (in his order of fights taking place): Edwin Rosario Ray Mancini Julio Cesar Chavez Felix Trinidad Roberto Duran x2 Sugar Ray Leonard Oscar De La Hoya and Jose Luis Ramirez who should also be in. Muhammad Ali fought: Archie Moore Sonny Liston x2 Floyd Patterson x2 Joe Frazier x3 Ken Norton x3 George Foreman Larry Holmes However, their resumes pale compared to Sugar Ray Robinson, who fought Henry Armstrong, Jake LaMotta, Carmen Basilio, Joey Giardiello, Gene Fullmer, Joey Maxim, Carl Olson, Kid Gavilan, Randy Turpin, Fritzie Zivic and Sammy Angott. Plus, Marty Servo who, like Ramirez, has been unfairly left out. Sal Sanchez had a very impressive 4-0, 4 kos record versus hall of famers, a record which (winning each of his fights versus hall of famers by knockout) is unequalled i think, but also it was only 3 hall of famers he faced. I'm talking about the amount of hall of famers faced, not the boxer's win-loss record against them.
Oscar de la Hoya’s resume is filled with HOFers. Hector Camacho Julio César Chávez Pernell Whitaker Felix Trinidad Shane Mosley Arturo Gatti Bernard Hopkins Floyd Mayweather Jr Manny Pacquiao
Fireman Jim Flynn fought; Langford x6 Flowers Johnsonx2 Fulton Miske Dempsey x2 Dillon x5 Papke x2 Gardner x2 Burns Root O' Brien Levinsky x3
If we're speaking strictly Heavyweight then Holyfield has.. Larry Holmes George Foreman Mike Tyson 2x Lennox Lewis Riddick Bowe 3X Michael Moore Dwight Muhammed Qawi 2X 7-3-1 record against them with 2 KO's
Nah Im counting every one...and holy sheet! Also Angel Robinson Garcia, not a champion, fought six. For a non champion, that is a lot!
Garcia's resume for a journeymen is pretty insane, he really fought everyone and anywhere. Duran, Napoles, Laguna, Benitez, Buchanan, Perkins. And has only been stopped 3 times out of his 80 losses. Really wish there was footage of him.
I think Greb holds the record. Here's his resume: Billy Miske Jack Blackburn George Chip Tommy Gibbons Mike Gibbons Jack Dillon Battling Levinsky Jeff Smith Gunboat Smith Mike McTigue Bill Brennan Willie Meehan Eddie McGoorty Mike O'Dowd Tiger Flowers Maxie Rosenbloom Mickey Walker Johnny Wilson Gene Tunney Tommy Loughran Jimmy Slattery Kid Norfolk
Ok, if you want to include HOFers from the "non participant" category, then Greb (Jack Blackburn) and McLarnin (Ruby Goldstein) both have 16. 6 for a non champion isn't bad - but a long way behind Sam Langford with 13, and Frankie Wallace, Gunboat Smith and Johnny Risko all with 12! Incidentally, Bob Foster should be added to Ali's list of HOFers.
That's an awful long list, 22 names - but on closer inspection the following are not HOFers: Gunboat McTigue Brennan Meehan McGoorty Wilson So Greb has 16, the same as McLarnin, with whom he shares the record!
These numbers will always skew to earlier days because there are categories for old-timers with cutoff dates for last bout. And those people will have had more years to be on ballots to have a chance to get in. At some point, every decent fighter in, say, the 1920s will be in … but it will be a LONG time before every decent fighter in the 1960s or 80s or 90s is in.
I didn't think about the non participants but they are fair game indeed. After all the thread is not "most hall of famers for their boxing careers" LOL! What I did not think of also was Langford, Smith and Risko, and Bob Foster! Good catch there!
