For top heavyweights it's probably a 6 or a 7. For all the flack he takes about his chin he fought as many punchers as anyone and was only KOed twice by absolute bombs.
Lewis had a fairly average chin, I put it in a similar rank to Joe Louis. Not glass, but not iron either.
I gave him 7. Between his two losses, the McAll Ko was the true chin check. And to Lewis's credit (if memory serves) he still rose to his feet. The Rahman KO was more of a temple shot along the ropes if I remember correct, and that was in a fight where Lewis was probably not in best shape endurancewise. I guess I'd need to sit down and rewatch both those losses ,but I definitely don't remember the Rahman loss as a "chin shot". But Lewis avenged both losses, and he faced every big hitter of his division. I can't say he took direct chin shots in all those fights, but he took the best Ray Mercer, Tommy Morrison, Holyfield, Shannon Briggs, David Tua, Mike Tyson and others had to offer...all superb punchers. of course Tua never landed a glove on Lewis, but all the others did and a few even rocked him and he stayed on his feet. In that regard, I think Lewis's chin is actually a bit underrated
I think so. If we’re comparing him just against other heavyweights and you have a scale of 1-10, his is probably above average but nothing really special. There are heavyweights who were knocked down more but not knocked out (Ali) and heavyweights who were stopped the same number of times but never knocked down (Chuvalo). Those guys are 9 or 10 out of 10 in the chin department in terms of heavyweights. I don’t think Lennox is that close to those guys.
I agree. Below guys like Ali, Liston, Frazier, Foreman but definitely above guys like Patterson, Louis (who may've had better recovery), etc.
Actually, I’m pretty sure the Rahman shot was right on the jaw - a terrific head jolter. With hands down, Lennox almost looked like he was giving him a free shot. I’d prob rate it better than McCalls punch but admit the visibility of Hasim’s punch was better.
That's a good position to place him Swag. Someone made a good point on a thread a while back as to how the resilience of Lewis' chin appeared to vary between some fights. Most fighters, at least in their prime, seem to hold a reasonably static quality to their chin - but (KO losses aside) it seemed that sometimes Lennox took shots better in some fights than he did in others, or vice versa - perhaps conditioning, lack of focus playing a part to some degree? Anyway, at least for me, that makes his chin a little bit harder to rate than the average bear - so across all instances of his chin being tested, I'm comfortable to average him out at 7.
Now that you mention it, his chin does seem better in certain fights. I remember one fight he literally invites a power puncher to hit him, is unphased then knocks them out. Other than the sheer stupidity of such a thing (could've easily backfired) it's mightily impressive. Tua also nailed him with some solid punches and Lewis seemed unphased (I've admittedly only watched highlights of their bouts).
