Agreed. This post made me think of Barkley as well. Not a great chin but he had no quit in him.

For best recuperative powers, I'd like to nominate Joe Grim.

Joe Louis, Juan Manuel Marquez, I don't think either guy had a great chin. But both had very good recuperative powers to instantly recover after a knockdown.

Arturo Gatti seemed initially easy to drop or hurt. But once he get hit more, it was like he get accustomed to the punches and be so hard to put down again.

No dramas, I know you’re not bagging Tszyu.

I’m a Tszyu fan myself - so I didn’t revisit the Hatton fight all too often for obvious reasons, lol.

But I will try to have a look at it myself next chance - I don’t know that Tszyu not answering was necessarily a conscious quit but I appreciate you taking the time to review and provide your observation.

Anyway, here’s Hatton himself framing it as the corner having pulled Kostya out and that KT wouldn’t have quit himself.

I think Larry Holmes probably fits all those descriptions.

Good idea to separate these 3 abilities. We do know these are separate. Weird how body works

Good call. No quit in the Hit Man.

I’m not a fan of Gil Clancy but he said that it seemed a long count when Tommy arose from the first KD. I timed it, if long it was fractionally (literally) over 10 seconds - so for all intents and purpose, Tommy did beat the count.

While Barkley’s punch had the Hail Mary vibe about it - Tommy did leave himself open, if only momentarily.

Tommy was destroying Iran to the body - and Barkley was slowing up - and as he did slow, Hearns kept throwing to vicious hooks to the body with greater impunity.

It was when Tommy dipped to his left, left hand low, looking for another potential body shot - that Iran struck with the right.

That Hearns arose from that KD was amazing. Again, Tommy’s an excellent call for so so chin but limitless heart.

Hell yeah! The Indian Rubber Man. Per his record and fight descriptions, there was something very freaky about that dude.

Yeah quite a few calls are a little slow. The fight could have been stopped then and there but Steele gave Tommy his chance. Let's be honest - was Hearns any better than Lewis was against McCall? Was he a little worse? Hearns was still stumbling a touch when Steele left him to his own devices.

Agree it was a bit of a hail Mary.

I’ve critiqued Mike Tyson before but I’ve done so objectively - and I would say there were later fights which Mike didn’t necessarily look to laying it all on the line.

But, the irony is, he does have the Douglas defeat in his favour, he took a number of hellacious shots before going down. He showed a lot of heart in that fight, imo.

And we might joke about Mike scrambling for his mouth piece but he dead set tried for all he was worth to get up and get back in - and, tbh, did Mike get counted out? The way I saw it, Mike was on his feet before “10” but Octavia waved it off - since Mike was unfit to continue.

Of course Tyson also took horrendous shots from Lewis before succumbing. I’d actually rate Mike’s chin as great, even if just poking its head into the spectrum of great.

I don't think Tyson lacked heart.
In his last couple of fights motivation certainly.

Those 3 are very important! How many times I've heard..."Oh...look at his speed...look at his fast hands...look at the style...look at his footwork...then "BANG"...one punch and he's out cold! Unless you have the ability to take it...not give up and quit ...and be able to get up after being knocked down...come from behind and win the fight...then all that other stuff...(style...speed...class)...doesn't matter...does it?
