This content is protected This is a title fight you rarely hear talked about these days, unfortunately. It's one of my favorite performances ever by a fighter, in this instance Mr. Torres. Interesting facts about this fight: - Torres was the underdog, and received significantly less money than Pastrano. Understandable given Pastrano was the champion, but Torres got $10,000 compared to Pastrano's $100K plus incentives. Crazy to think considering Pastrano didn't win a single round. (Edit: Willie won the first round.) - Torres was the first Latin American to win the Light Heavyweight championship. - This fight set a gate record at the pre-renovated Madison Square Garden. - Willie Pastrano's last fight. Thoughts on this sadly forgotten classic bout?
I agree with everything you said but need to rewatch it myself. I am a little grieved people do not talk more about Pastrano and Torres, in particular. There's actually a considerable amount of fights out there they participated in (probably 15 apiece), and readily available on YT, but people never talk about them. I got put the plug in for Torres that he is my favorite peek-a-boo fighter.
It’s funny that I just saw this thread because I was really annoyed watching this Serrano-Cruz card and someone just announced that never before had there been an undisputed Puerto Rican world champion- men or women. I just wanted to say, did you never hear of Jose Torres?
