Golovkins stock after 3rd Canelo fight.

Yeah, both great fights but i had GGG winning both. In the 3rd fight, i think it was a strategy for GGG to try to fight a high tech kind of fight as appose to the gunslinging style vs Murata. I was expecting a perfect blend of both to be honest.

 

Yeah, Golovkin's ability to take a shot has really lived up to the hype, his defense and boxing ability is underrated as well. In the trilogy fight he seemed to nulify a usual super middleweight power house by boxing and moving out of range to avoid shots and making it look easy, when any shot did get through they didn't even faze him. The angry and all business Canelo would have run GGG over if he could, but he couldn't GGG was way too good for that and was still a real threat. If GGG would have started pushing it earlier, maybe round five on, the fight would have lived up to hype and GGG may have won.

 

To me it seems like Golovkins stock is about the same or maybe even a little better. He hasn't lost his spot on any of the rankings, he is still favored to beat fighters that he was favored to beat before. He had a very active year in 2022, stopping a 2x middleweight champ that has never been stopped that was a top 5 contender. Recently went up a division at 40 years old and fought a top 5 PFP and undisputed champ that is a noted super middleweight puncher and gave a good account of himself, went the distance, was the stronger man down the stretch, and was never even close to being hurt, all this and it was considered a sub par performance. Thats just my observation. If GGG can comeback to his destructive ways in the next couple of fights then the relatively close trilogy fight will age just fine, especially for a fighter in his forties.

 

I actually believe the fight was as close as the score cards indicated. Round one was close, but Golovkin won it, rounds 6 and 8 are swing rounds, rounds 9,10,&11 were Golovkins and round 12 was a swing round. So 8-4 or 7-5 is very fair.

 

You know, that went through my mind as well, because we all know how GGG throws his punches and the authority in which he throws them. Something didnt look right. That being said, Banks mentioned in an interview before the fight that they weren't trying to focus on power " because the power is already there" but that they were focusing on strategy and throwing punches. He said, at this level it is extremely hard to get a KO, If a KO presents it's self they will take it, but they have to trust the judges, which i thought was a little odd. I actually think it is possible that GGG just tightened up his shots and and made them less looping and more concise, and although the punches didn't seem as lethal, they still carried force that could be seen in Canelo's behavior and caution. Some jabs were light and some heavy enough to knock Canelo off balance, there were check hooks that were fast and hard that Canelo definitely felt. Too bad he only landed the corkscrew punch once because i love that punch. So, if GGG was holding something back, i can't wait to see him start opening up again, i don't care if its at 168lbs or 160lbs. I still think he can defeat Canelo who is getting older himself if he lets his hands go more and earlier.
