So underrated- he got all his experience fighting drunk bikers while working as a brothel bouncer as a teen. TIJ got all the way to the Olympic try-outs where he was robbed- that was before he ever even had a coach because your uncle no matter his experience doesn't count.
Probably at least 100 boxers beat him..He fought in the turn of the century for ****s sake, his ancient/primitive skillset won't cut it against more modern opposition.
That IS NOT True nor Accurate... I Agree MANY, MANY TOP Fighters would beat him... but don't let Improper Old Film footage fool you. People were still people and Strong Fit TOUGH Guys/Men from the Dawn of Time till now are STILL Capable people in ANY Age! Old Poor Footage is the proplem, not the people.
Can't say without ever seeing him on film, but I imagine several MWs would have had a good chance of beating him...LaMotta, Robinson, Zale, Griffith, Hagler, Hearns, Jones, GGG, Burley, Holman Williams to name a few.
Greb beat 5 different Hall of Famers 10 different times... in one year. But yeah, 100 guys would be able to beat him.
Greb wasn't only a non-stop puncher, he was almost impossible to hit as well! I so agree about old fight footage. When you think about it, the old timers are at a disadvantage in these fantasy matchups because the terrible film quality makes them look erratic and non-rhythmical. It's so hard to gauge their rhythm & craftiness, small details get missed. For instance could you imagine seeing Willie Pep in perfect HD, with all his subtle movement and mastery of inches & angles? You can't really get the full depth of what they're doing very often.
I don't need too... I know people Walked, Talked, Pissed, Shat, Ran, Drank, Ate and F'd JUST the Same as ALWAYS. So Tough Guys & Hardmen, could beat & batter in any age. Case closed. I agree, that 'Athleticism' & Technique developed, But that was ALREADY there by the 30s and remained with us abundantly untill the 90s, but it too has also wained since then with So Fewer Fights & Hardship creating Drive. Anyway, Loads beat Greb, but he'd be no walk in the park either.
Given his hectic schedule, he is one of the most beatable middleweight greats. Of course it might be the case that beating him, would just make you the man that shot Billy he Kid. Now if the fight is a once in a lifetime opportunity for him, then expect him to be very hard to beat!
If he was so beatable how come he so rarely got beat? Even tho he was at one point a novice thrown to the wolves and at another, quite extended period half blind and physically deteriorated from hundreds of fights?
What you talking about he fought in the turn of the century? He beat Gene Tunney in 1923 and Micky Walker in 1925. Those two wins alone apart from his other achievements make him somebody to be reckoned with. I suspect in his prime he would have been a nightmare for anyone but without the footage it’s a difficult opinion to decide one way or the other. To write him off is simply stupid.
He's obviously an amazing fighter but without any footage whatsoever i'm just not going to try and guess.
I seriously doubt that Toney would win more than one or two rounds from him. 60s middleweights not good enough and i think he would upset Monzon Only three men could do it and they were all black
