You know maybe I think we have something to relate on- just drawing back to a Sanchez thread I made. Real highs even self destructive ones for a few years are worth more than anything, being a beautiful meteorite is better than any mediocre existence . I would trade anything for 10 truly historic years it’s as Nietzsche has said the world is suffocating its greatness and pushing towards sowing mediocrity by design. Many would prefer 9-5 for life than what’s needed to make history. But back to Joe- I don’t think a young Joe knowing his future would not want to trade a second of his career for a happy retirement, this Joe may but his fire is already snuffed, now he’d probably be happy to have lived as a postman and lived till 200 but it’s all a matter of perspective.
Yes, taking punches even when you're deemed still viable and relatively young is bad enough. However, there's no accounting for the damage caused by punches taken at an older, and far more vulnerable age. I hope Foreman dodges the bullet since he also fought, even more frequently, until an extraordinary age and copped some fair punishment along the way.
This is sad news. But least he lived his life like he wanted. Hope he's cared for well, it makes a big difference when someone s suffering with dementia.
In hindsight, I haven’t seen or heard much of Joe in more recent years - but I did find a 10-month-old article by Australian local newspaper The Daily Telegraph dated 17 April 2022. Unfortunately, I couldn't access the full article due to subscription requirement, but the headline/preamble said that friends had raised an alarm since it seemed Joe had "disappeared off the map". The reporter states that she tracked Joe down to an aged care facility in QLD, Australia, the reporter further stating that he is "alive and well", "reliving his glory days" and living his "best life" at the aged care home.
Sorry to hear about your grandmother,Cobra. My heart goes out to you - and her. My aunt went through it too. Heartbreaking. Really sorry to hear that Joe is suffering from this. I always liked him.
Great stuff. Thanks NN. I didn’t know his wife Marlene had passed - sad also. There’s no accounting for the effect of losing your wife of so many years either. In your link there’s a still frame taken from an IV with Joe. I found it on YouTube -it was uploaded 6 years ago so about 2016/2017 which I assume is when the IV was done but can’t say for sure. Joe sounds sharp, healthy and a good sense of humour. This content is protected
Awful. The last I read about Bugner was when he was on reality tv in the UK, and his sons were speaking about him in an article. One son had a relationship with him and the son who was less than a year old at the time Joe and wife divorced did not, and had only met him a few times. He said that Joe taught him how not to be a father but that he was looking to form a relationship with him before it was too late. That stuck with me. I wonder if he did and has one now during these difficult times.
If there’s one fighter I thought would escape this it would have been Joe. He had a good defence and didn’t really take a major beating in his career. Every time he appeared in later years he seemed in good nick and very sharp of mind. It just shows you with this awful disease it can strike anyone at any time. I hope Joe is without distress and is comfortable, thoughts to all his family.
Very sad to hear this about anyone, top bloke Bugner and much better than people than a lot of people think
