Most definitely. Hearns did it. Jackson could have too.

As said, JJ did not have that hand speed to blitz Duran like Hearns did so we can't equate the two. Now also said he has bigger power than Hearns so the chance is still there I just think a Duran who fought Hagler makes the decision more often than not. Would b interesting if Duran ended up stopping him but we'll never know.

Jackson had very fast hands. McCallum actually picked as his opponent with the fastest hands. I don't think there was much between Hearns and Jackson in terms of handspeed.

Oh no JJ wasn't slow at all but McCallum didn't fight Hearns either. And over prime Roy? Nah I can't see why he would say that no disrespect to McCallum.

He said something to the effect that he found it hard to compare since he was old and slow when faced Jones, so he picked Jackson.

He beat Cuevas and Moore at junior middle winning a world title. He went 15 rounds with Hagler the only guy to do that when Marvin was champ and beat Barkley for another world title. Thats a bit better than competitive.

True. But Cuevas was a welterweight. Moore was green and never fully materialized. And Duran also lost simms, Laing and got murdered by Hearns.

Hearns lost to Hagler and Barkley twice. Duran coming from 135 up was simply amazing to be able to beat Barkley and and have Hagler back peddling. The Hearns fight was a one time deal Duran was so drained from making weight its surprising he lasted as long as he did.

Disparity in skill level will take away Jackson's power, bring it down to something non lethal for Duran. When you're fighting someone much better than you you won't be able to land your shots with the same power as you would to a lower level guy. Duran would have to be in top shape for this one

You guys have all the angles covered very well, so I will not say much.
The division is relevant, & I agree Jackson is fast.
A good argument can be made either way.
Being more skilled (Duran) may or may not compensate for Jackson's slugger/stylistic & natural prime weight advantage.

The Duran that faced Barkley was more than half a decade removed from the one that battered Moore and frustrated Hagler quite a bit. It's chalk and cheese for mine regardless of how well he fared with Barks.

Jackson is fast but Hearns was ridiculously sharp that night, he was like a snake striking. It was incredible really, an all time performance from him.

Height, reach and speed have all been talked but what truly enabled Hearns to do what he did to Duran was his ATG jab. It preoccupied Duran early and Hearns feints both to head and body were on fire. The first bomb Hearns that Hearns dropped Duran with is one of boxings great sights. His left jab has no sooner landed on Duran chest before the right hand explodes off his jaw. It's pure perfection. The sound of the two punches almost blends into one such was the lightning speed and lack of time between impacts. Duran is in the process of blocking the jab to the chest. Duran simply doesn't see much of that right hand and we all know how dangerous punches are when you cannot brace for them.

In the second round Hearns rips a jab at Duran who is on the ropes, perfectly anticipates the attempted right hand counter and slips back before ripping a left jab at the chest again and quickly crossing over with the right to tag Duran clean again and have him reeling. Hearns has got it down pat and Duran just can't stop it. The coupe de grace comes as Hearns doubles up on the jab to the chest this time, feints almost before pole axing a straight up Duran yet again with the right hand follow up. Duran is oblivious to that right hand.

So it wasn't just power that enabled Hearns to do what he did, it was being able to disguise those nasty bombs to the point Duran barely knew where they were coming from.

so for me it's not a case of if Hearns can do it Jackson does as he hits at least as hard. There's was brilliance in the way Hearns set up those right hand bombs and Jackson just doesn't have that level of skill or near the jab that Hearns had. Now with his power you can knock out virtually anyone but i have doubts as to whether he can set up Duran well enough to knock him out.

A great question is could Jackson beat Duran at 154.

I always got the impression that Duran wasn't fully prepared for the Hearns fight so not sure it is reflective of the result, good though it was for Tommy. Also I think Hearns was just too tall and rangey for Duran, with huge leverage and the ability to keep him off, so a stylistic nightmare for Roberto. While you can't count Jackson out I think he is far more conventional fighter than Hearns and Duran could figure him out. At MW the size difference could tell but at LMW I give Roberto a chance as simply a better technician.
