Based on footages I seen on both fighters, it seem that Hagler had a bit more difficulty when facing stylistic boxers and it seems that Burley represents himself as very well-rounded opponent for Hagler. Def not counting Hagler out as his boxer-puncher style is really hard to outmatch. I see this as a very close fight w/ SD or MD for Hagler but I wouldn't be surprised if Burley edges Hagler.
Burley, one of the most avoided fighters in history. He fought in one of the toughest eras. Eddie Futch and Moore had great things to say about him. I'm positive it's a great fight, if he beat Marvin it would be a close decision and the other way around.
I think Hagler would do better against the field, but I think that Burley is a very difficult fight for him. I think he might find himself befuddled at times and maybe out-hit form the perspective of the cleaner punching. Marvin wastes so little and Burley apparently even less so it might get dull when they try to out-read each-other which I think might be Burley's game - I don't think Hagler could steamroll him and I don't think he would try. So, controversial, difficult to score, everyone disagreeing about the outcome but maybe Burley gets the nod two times out of three.
Just wondering what Burley's biggest purse was? Here we are in an era when," comedy boxers" like Jake Paul can command and get huge £$£$£ for fighting non entities . What a complete absurdity!
You raise a very interesting and salient point, to-wit it could turn out to be a very tactical and thought out fight, which may not be the most exciting to watch, Hagler would prob be the more industrious of the pair, but if Burley fights to his DNA then it could fizzle out... stay safe buddy, and appreciate all the hard work you put in, it doesn't go unnoticed.
It appears that Charley Burley's largest purse was between $3,000. and $4,000. He received such a purse in his second bout with Oakland Billy Smith. - Chuck Johnston
As I've said a few times I really admire Hagler as a fighter, but during his title reign apart from SRL obviously. Did Hagler really ever fight a slick/boxer type ? I guess maybe Duran somewhat ? But prior to Haglers title reign he lost a few fights to those type of boxers, now to be fair to Hagler he did revenge those losses and was pre prime at that point. But still he did lose to that style prior to his title reign, and then lost to SRL who had that style when Hagler was a bit past it. But it does seem that if Hagler had a slight weakness it might of been to slick/boxer types. And whilst I'm not the most knowledgeable on Charles Burley, I know he was a highly skilled boxer who all historians rave about. So based on his style and all the accolades Burley has, I would give him a fairly decent chance of beating Hagler in a close fight.
I think Hearns kinda counts as a slick fighter, as does Duran. Not stylistically equivalent to Burley tho
I don't think Hearns is a slick fighter per se like fighters Hagler lost to, hes more of a boxer/puncher for me
The second bout between Charley Burley and Oakland Billy Smith drew a gate of about $15,000. That may not be a large gate, but it must've been one of the largest for any of Burley's bouts. Burley was not much of a drawing card for a fighter of his stature and ability. - Chuck Johnston
From what I've seen of the little footage available of him, Burley was a mover who used the ring and fought from the outside. I thought his style was similar to Roy Jones, but I don't think he had Roy's incredible power. It would be a good fight and he could trouble Hagler greatly. It's a toss up...
I'm going with the more proven, credentialed fighter, Hagler who was number one contender turned world champion with 13 successful defenses vs questionable, awkward looking contender Burley with no title Hagler's southpaw style combined with the power absent from Burley enables a mid rounds tko
