You claimed "Berbick gave Holmes absolute fits". Me, Swag, and Rules all read the same post. It's a ridiculous claim. Nobody says a fighter gave another fighter fits unless they think it was a close and frustrating bout. If you didn't mean that then what did you mean?

When did Holmes get dropped by Wells an Isaac? First I heard of it.Thought Shavers was the first one to drop him in their second fight in 79 though Weaver looked to done it a few fights earlier but it wasn’t ruled as a knockdown by the ref

Given Mike was the other principal in this match, it’s ironic that anyone could consider the KO of a 38 yo, out of shape and fighting on short notice Holmes not to be an aberration.

Just 2 years later, opinions abounded that Tyson himself, at a mere 23 yo, was a considerable distortion of his own good self.

Larry was def. leery when he fought Mike - likely based on the fact of his own known deteriorations and ill preparedness.

The shot that first dropped Larry was titanic. I would say it approximated to Shavers’ right hand punch in terms of its own sheer force - but Earnie’s punch caught Larry coming in and was right on the chin. Larry was also hurt earlier in the same round against Earnie.

All in all - Shavers shot was more effective but Larry still arose from it and came back - and it was after 19 rounds ? of engagement (in total) before Shavers did manage such a singularly, devastating punch. Holmes’ prior victory over Shavers being a consummate and an absolute clinic.

As it was in 88, Tyson’s right caught Larry on the left temple and screwed his equilibrium - Holmes falling again due to his own legs failing him about 13 secs after the initial KD.

Re Mike’s finishing abilities. It’s worth noting that after the second fall/KD Larry still lasted a further 57 secs - during which time an already wounded Holmes was doing his best to evade Mike.

For all his combo punching otherwise - Mike was stalking Larry and throwing single shots - this was 88 Mike, who, when found guilty of sound same later in the piece (looking for the one shot) was said to be not the “old Mike”.

In seeking to finish Larry, I wouldn’t say that Mike was necessarily efficient in his approach.

I would think that it was obvious that this version of Holmes was a far cry from the prime Larry - with concrete facts/reasoning to understand and prove how and why.

Though a great victory on Mike’s part, I think the true aberration would be affording Mike absolute credit without making due deductions for Holmes being quite an impaired version of himself relative to his prime.

Well, Mike did beat the guy who beat Larry Holmes, the guy who Larry Holmes refused to fight, and a guy named Larry Holmes. I think he knocked them all out too.

Anymore info on it? I can’t find anything on it apart from Holmes winning by ko in the 3rd round. Was it a flash knockdown or was he dropped heavily?

Fair enough. I guess Bonecrusher gave Tyson fits. The same Bonecrusher who was stopped by Holmes.

I’ll never be able to say weather or not it was an “ aberration.” But I DO feel that win or lose, Mike Tyson would always have been a very hard fight for Holmes.

I have always liked Larry but Tyson and Rooney knew he was vulnerable to an overhand right he was his whole career. A younger Holmes may have lasted a bit longer but I think its basically the same. Tyson was a force of nature at that time.

Mike would probably beaten prime Holmes but it would have been much tougher. Larry had a tendency to drop that left hand, which led to him being badly hurt by Shavers and Snipes in his prime by single right hands. Mike could have finished him off unlike Shavers and Snipes

How would dropping his right hand lead to him been badly hurt by right hands? Surely he would be in more danger of being hurt by a left hand?

Shavers was a very hard hitter but Snipes only had 22 Kos in 39 wins which means 17 people were able to survive against him. Which probably suggests he wasn't a very hard hitter but dropped Holmes and Berbick, both known for being able to take a punch especially Holmes, but it makes me question Holmes ability to take a punch, unless Renaldo did pack a lot of power in his right but just didn't load up on it as much as he should've in fights. Shavers couldn't finish nearly as well as Tyson. Holmes got hurt in the 1st round against Ray Mercer by a jab. When Holmes fought Kevin Isaac he did get dropped, it was in the 2nd round I believe

Afraid Dubble can't decipher posts that have an ounce of objectivity.
