Backstory for the noobs: Emile Griffith was a 3 weight champion and was secretly gay. Benny Paret taunted him about being gay and Emile in his fury had beaten him in one of the most horrible endings to the fight. Benny died because of his injuries. I think that happened in 2005, still a heartbreaking but bittersweet video. It's powerful hearing that forgiveness from Paret's son and also seeing Griffith find peace after that tragic event. Can't imagine having to live through decades of feeling guilt and regret, but at least he's been relieved of that and got a proper closure.
Griffith was nearly KTFO in the 6th (I think). Probably a bit lucky it was right at the end of the round. It was a brutal fight. A tragic finish but the ref and corner need bear some of that burden.
I watched that doc when it came out. Griffith was not just ordinarily CTE slurring. He got beaten savagely in the 80s I think in Manhattan for being gay.
Emile Griffith was a gracious human being and fighter. It was closure for the both of them, I am sure that Benny Paret's son appreciated the gesture.
He met him in the documentary called Ring Of Fire: Emile Griffith Story...I think the full thing was on YouTube somewhere. Goes through Griffiths early life, career, and Paret fight.
