    Carlos Zarate v Orlando Amores

Not too much to say about this one.

A pre-title Zarate against former flyweight challenger Amores.

Amores surprised me with the success he was having with the right hand which he landed flush on several occasions, he just didn’t have the power to affect Zarate.

Zarate looked his patient self, albeit slightly easier to hit than I’d expect but the way he finished Amores in round 3 was perfect, a left hand combo that had Amores down and out.

    Buster Douglas vs Jesse Ferguson

    1 Even

    7 Douglas
    8 Ferguson
    9 Ferguson
    10 Even

    96-96 even

So i just watched this rare Heavyweight fight that recently appeared on Youtube, definitely one of the hardest fights i've ever scored. Before i go into the fight i'd like to point out a few key rounds.

Round 1 = Ferguson pretty much controlled most of this round, and stunned Douglas a few times. But Douglas landed his trademark right uppercut with 10 rounds left in the round, and Ferguson was basically out on his feet, and was lucky the punch was right at the end of the round. There's a few different ways you could score this round depending on your criteria, but i thought Douglas's big moment at the end of the round was enough to even the round up, Al Bernstein scored the round for Douglas which i could see also. But i thought Ferguson did too much overall in the round, for Douglas to actually take the round overall.

Round 6 = This round was a polar opposite to the 1st round, Douglas appeared to be in control of this round for the most part. But Ferguson landed a right uppercut of his own and badly stunned Douglas. Now this moment happened with about 50 seconds left in the round ? and Ferguson also finished the round strong. And that was enough for me to Ferguson to take the round overall.

Now just to discuss the fight quickly as a whole, Douglas primarily used the jab and was more active than Ferguson and was able to pin him on the ropes at times. But Ferguson appeared the land the harder punches overall, and had a good steady body attack one of his most effective tactics in this fight was going to the body.

Overall i can't argue with the decision it was such a close fight, and depending on your criteria both fighters had a good case for winning this fight.

Also interesting that if Douglas would've won this fight, it's very possible he could of gone on to fight Mike Tyson. I don't think at this stage in Douglas's career he would've beat Tyson, but it's definitely interesting how a close decision altered boxing history.

    1 Gordon
    2 Gordon
    3 Gordon
    4 Gordon
    5 Gordon
    6 Gordon
    7 Gordon
    8 Gordon
    9 Berbick
    10 Gordon

    99-91 Gordon

What a strange fight this was i'm not sure what was wrong with Berbick but he was lifeless in this fight, he virtually did nothing in this fight apart from maul Gordon along the ropes. Gordon would actually be pinned along the ropes, and drop his arms below his waist out of boredom believe it or not because Berbick was doing nothing. I was literally saying to myself "Hit him Berbick he's literally sitting duck with his arms down".

Overall Gordon was the only one landing any effective punches, as he stunned Berbick a few times countering with combinations. Which is why i had it so wide for Gordon, i can't believe one judge only had 96-95 for Gordon what in the world was he watching ? i could maybe see 1 or 2 even rounds, and possibly Berbick may of won 2 rounds, but 4 rounds for Berbick is baffling.

Final thoughts i wouldn't recommend watching this fight, basically Berbick threw this fight away by doing nothing in a strange performance from him. This was also my first time watching Gordon fight, i knew he frequented as a Heavyweight before fighting as a Cruiserweight but he was too small. He's definitely a fighter that benefitted having the Cruiserweight division invented, as he's perfectly sized 190 pound fighter or there abouts.

    Leigh Wood vs Mauricio Lara

    1 Wood
    2 Lara
    3 Wood
    4 Wood
    5 Wood
    6 Wood
7 Lara wins after Wood's corner throws in the towel

    69-65 Wood

Another memorable fight Wood was in complete control, walks on to a left hook Woods gets up but was badly shaken and Wood's corner throws in the towel. A bit controversial since there was only 10 seconds in the round maybe Wood could of recovered ?

D, I had it a bit closer with Lara taking the first two rounds and a share of the 5th with Wood ahead 58-57 through 6 completed rounds (did you score the 7th?). You're right, the stoppage was dicey. With 10 seconds left, could he have recovered between rounds or would he have gotten hurt in the last 10 seconds? A tough one. I think at this point he was slowly coming apart at the seams with that cut and absorbing a bad left hook. He'll live to fight another day, so i suppose we can't beat up his team too much. Good fight, though.

Wood would've took the 7th round for me before Lara's punch landed. I do think the stoppage was a strange one though, I'm not saying that Wood would've recovered but who knows ? With a minute left. I mean Wood did survive some very shakey moments vs Conlan to comeback and win. Unfortunately we'll never know.

Jose Torres v Gomeo Brennan (Miami's 10 point system)

    Round 1: 10-9 Torres
    Round 2: 10-9 Torres
    Round 3: 10-9 Brennan
    Round 4: 10-9 Torres
    Round 5: 10-9 Brennan
    Round 6: 10-9 Brennan
    Round 7: 10-9 Torres
    Round 8: 10-9 Torres
    Round 9: 10-10 Even
    Round 10: 10-9 Torres

Total: 97-94 Torres (actual scores: 97-94 and 96-95 both for Torres along with a 96-96 Even, Torres wins a majority decision)

Man, let me tell ya, this fight was over before I knew it. It just flowed for me. Brennan reminded me of Terrance Alli in style. A fast, sharp boxer with no real punch who didn't mind making a fight of it. None of this staying on his bike, he got right in there on the harder-punching Torres and had his moments of success. But the well-schooled Torres kept that tight peek-a-boo guard and his harder punching made the difference. I really enjoyed the fight.

I just checked on the actual scorecards. It was 58-56, 58-56 and 59-55 all for Wood. Had it lasted to the end of the round - presumably Lara would have received a 10-8 round - it would have been even on 2 cards, so it was still anybody's fight. Definitely worthy of a rematch.

Earl Hargrove KO9 Don King (no, not him)

At the behest of @scartissue, I looked into this one and found it a lot of fun. Neither man is exactly a ring artist (George Benton in Hargrove's corner can barely contain his exasperation with his fighter) but together their collective lack of defense and fundamentals make for an entertaining brawl.

Hargrove comes out fast, hurting and flooring King in the first minute. King bravely hangs in and punches back as best he can however, and survives.

King finds success in the next three rounds by crowding Hargrove and taking away much of his power. He follows instructions to hammer the body and turns the tide. Hargrove seems a bit lost by the end of the fourth.

The Philadelphian has a sage corner though, and rebounds with a passable jab and reestablishes distance in the fifth. He eats shots in return of course, but King's punches lack true power and are wider than the shorter, straighter ones from Hargrove.

Finally, in the ninth King has eaten enough shots, and tries to back away. This, however, is exactly what Hargrove is looking for, and a series of long right hands prompts the referee to step in as the ninth rounds winds down.

    1. Hargrove (10-8)
    2. Even
    3. King
    4. King
    5. Hargrove
    6. Hargrove
    7. Hargrove
    8. Even
    9. Hargrove stops King

78-75 Hargrove at the time of the stoppage.

Ilunga Junior Makabu MD12 Aleksei Papin

This is exciting, Papin is quicker, Makabu is stronger. Makabu is also a little more aggressive, prepared to take slightly more chances. It costs him in the first, he just about gets outclipped despite the fact the manages to corner Papin right at the end of the round. Makabu also seemed in danger of having his jab countered out of the fight, it was an interesting problem anyway, but he seems closer in the second, using variety, and a chancy southpaw hook to bring the jab back in, it's good boxing. These ebbs and flows leave them all square after four, Makabu though has made more strategic headway - he is relying here upon body punching to give him an edge. It provides one through eight, and the experience brings him home. A drilled straight left hand brings him the benefits of a knocdown against a stumbling Papin in a raging twelfth.

    Good fight.

    Makabu:2,4,5,7,8,9,11,12*.
    Papin:1,3,6,10.

    116-111 Makabu

@salsanchezfan this was my scorecard when i watched this amazing fight last year.

    Earl Hargrove vs Don King

    1 Hargrove knockdown 10-8
    2 Hargrove
    3 King
    4 King
    5 Hargrove
    6 Hargrove
    7 Hargrove
    8 King
    9 stoppage Hargrove wins TKO

    77-74 Hargrove

What can i say about this fight ? absolutely unbelievable one of the best fights i've seen in sometime.

Earl Hargrove comes out for the 1st round, in probably one of the most aggressive and brutal displays i've ever seen. He drops King in the first 30 seconds, and never stops punching for the entire 3 minutes, with King even coming back in the last minute. An opening round that would rival Hearns/Hagler.

After that amazing round King miraciously recovers, and then starts backing up Hargrove. And from then on the fight is just a back and forth war, with both men taking ridiculous amount of punishment. And it's basically down to who wants it more.

The 8th round both men with basically hardly anything left, just keep hitting eachother over and over. I don't think a single punch was blocked, a round straight out of a rocky movie.

Finally Hargrove catches King in the 9th round who is dazed and goes back towards the ropes, and Hargrove lands few more head snapping punches. And the ref rightly steps in to end a brutal slugfest.

Few other interesting things about the fight, Frank Fletcher was at ringside. And was saying he'd move down to Jr Middleweight to fight the winner. Can you imagine how good of a fight Earl Harlgrove vs Frank Fletcher would of been ?

Also the infamous trainer Panama Lewis was in Don King's corner.

Overall amazing fight i recommend anyone to watch this.

This was my card on the fight:

Earl Hargrove v Don King (N.J. rounds scoring basis)

Round 1: Hargrove (scores a knockdown)
    Round 2: Hargrove
    Round 3: King
    Round 4: King
    Round 5: Hargrove
    Round 6: Hargrove
    Round 7: Hargrove
    Round 8: King
    Round 9: Hargrove stops King

Total through 8 completed rounds: 5-3 Hargrove

It was just a terrific fight. A real throwback to those great old clubfights out of Eastern Parkway Arena or Sunnyside Gardens or the Olympic Auditorium. I noted on my scorecard after the 6th round ended, "Wow!"
