Chavez vs Hagler P4P

To be fair, Hagler's best win in Hearns did went up to LHW and defeated a HOFer in Virgil Hill. Light heavyweight is far from Hearns' best weight class but he still made it work.

 

Chavez though I wouldn't disagree with anyone picking Hagler.

So who did Chavez beat who was better than Hearns?

 

Including 130, 135, 140 and 147, R Mayweather, Camacho, Rosario, and Lockridge have seen the top spot of a division and Jose Luis Ramirez, Castillo, LaPorte, and Taylor (only behind Chavez ) have been near the top. Make what you want of the Whitaker draw and Randall rematch but that was the pfp 1 and another top fighter. He fought all of these guys when they were relevant if not peaking.

Had Julio been a middlweight, he wouldnt have been nearly as successful as Marvin

He could be outboxed (Pernel), outsped (Taylor, DLH ) or out toughed (Randall)

I think Julio and Joe Frazier are more closely matched in terms of skill

 

all you're really doing is throwing superlatives at him in an effort to build him up

That's not what I asked. I said who did he beat who was better than Hearns?

 

A series of incomplete , poorly thought out claims .. Hagler looked bad and disappointed against thirty three year old blown up lightweight Duran who hit him often, nearly closed up his left eye, and exposed him as not as Marvelous as he claimed when fighting a certain caliber of boxer and this was a watered down Duran. Hagler could not soundly defeat a ridiculously inactive Ray Leonard, a blown up welter, because he could not deal with the the movement or the speed or the intellect. This was a big man being exposed by smaller, older, better fighters. I highly respect Marvin but these are facts. Chavez was edged by Whitaker who at the time was the best P4P fighter in the world, equal in size in a competitive fight ... look at Whitaker after the fight and it was the first time we ever saw wear and tear in his face after a bout. We saw who was standing at the end of the Taylor bout and the condition of the men and this was an exceptional , prime Taylor . Against Oscar he was an old man fighting a terrific fighter in that fighter's prime.Chavez fought and defeated much better fighters .. Martinez, Castillo, Mayweather, Lockridge, LaPorte, Rosario, Ramirez, Taylor, Camacho, Haugen .. Hagler had a long career and fought a lot of very tough guys but the three best fighter's he ever got in the ring with were smaller men, Duran, Leonard and Hearns .. he has no wins against great natural middleweight fighters in their own prime at his weight and he chose to never go up when those challenges didn't materialize .. I also have my doubts about how Marvin would have done against the group of middleweights that came after him .. Jones, Hopkins, Toney and Nunn all would have been far more interesting and challenging match ups of him than anyone he fought at 160 .. I don't think he touches Jones, might have his skills neutered by Hopkins and Toney or Nunn would have been either way type of bouts ... zero knocking Marvin who was a warrior and a great fighter ... do your homework.

 

Taylor at 140 was better than Hearns at 160.

 

It's real close between the two. Chavez was a wreaking machine in
3 weight classes, though he didn't beat a fighter considered "Great"
he did take apart some very goods..... Look at some of the names,
Lockridge, Laporte, Mayweather x 2, Ramirez, Rasario, Camacho,
Taylor, From top to bottom Chavez probably faced a better grade of competition
overall than Hagler.
Hagler though has two ATG's on his list in Hearns and Duran who should
make anyones's top 30-20 fighters in history , plus is the reason fighters like,
Hamsho, Sibson, Roldan, Mugabi and even Obejimas couldn't win a championship.
Though a past prime Mugabi did manage to win at Jr,Middleweight, he was clearly
not the same fighter he was prior to and in his fight with Hagler.
I'll favor The " Marvelous one " slightly, but wouldn't argue with anyone who
favors Chavez. it's not as wide of a gulf between the two as some would
make it appear.

 

Chavez moving up to beat Taylor would’ve been like Hagler moving up to fight Saad. You’re a fanboy.
