I too had Zarate up by 2 points at the end of their 15 rounder. But it was a toughie. On the subject of Pintor, if you really enjoy a good Pintor fight, you need to check out his title defense against Jovito Rengifo. I saw it live back in the day and scored it off youtube. Just a terrific fight. Here is what I wrote:

    Lupe Pintor vs. Jovito Rengifo

Not a very long fight to score, but I remember watching this fight live back in the day and thoroughly enjoying it. Both fighters hitting sharp and clean and it was a damn good fight as long as it lasted.

    Round 1: 10-9 Rengifo
    Round 2: 10-9 Rengifo
    Round 3: 10-9 Rengifo
    Round 4: 10-9 Pintor
    Round 5: 10-9 Pintor
    Round 6: 10-10 Even
    Round 7: 10-9 Pintor
    Round 8: Pintor stops Rengifo

Total through 7 completed rounds: 67-67 Even (actual scores: 67-66 twice for Rengifo and a 67-66 for Pintor)

Although I had it even going into the 8th, one could see Rengifo slowly fraying at the edges. They griped at the stoppage, but it was only a matter of time. Good fight and a good challenge from a fighter who really didn't deserve his shot. But he made the best of it.

Funnily enough, I watched it last night, Scar. Good fight and Pintor showed his ability to ramp things up after starting slowly.

I'm in agreement with you guys I thought Zarate shaded it aswell, but I felt like he could of done a bit more. I remember the fight being very tactical with not much happening, it was a very slow paced with not much happening in alot of the early rounds.

In Puerto Rico, we never forgot him for his great fight with Wilfredo Gomez-easily among my favorite fights of all time if not the favorite one-and for his kind words towards Puerto Rico, even though he called Puerto Rico a beautiful city

Re the Johnny Owens fight, lots of spectators witnessed the degrading actions of his fans who were disgusting that night, and that reflected on him sadly, himself he never ever forgot about the matchstick man and it is a testament to the old school fighters who remember and respect their fellow warriors, and he deserves the absolute utmost respect.

Never heard of him. Sounds interesting. Will look into him as soon as work stops getting in the way. So many fascinating boxing personalities/careers to learn about...

I liked the Rengifo fight, he looked very sharp and sound for the first couple rounds. I think I remember him being a natural flyweight and so was going to be hard-pressed to match Pintor's strength.

Zárate 9-6 in rounds, extra point for the knockdown. 10-5 more acceptable score than 8-7 Zárate IMO. No way Pintor won the fight. That would mean Zárate won 6 rounds which would be crazy.

Watched it today. Love the old Tim Ryan/Gil Clancy CBS telecasts. Pity about the ghostly picture quality, although I've seen worse. Respect to Rengifo, who looked sharp and competitive the early going. And, of course, respect to Lupe Pintor, who always came to fight.

Same. The greatest sportscaster for me was Cosell. Yes, I know he was pompous and self-regarding. He thought he was part of the event, critics say. The thing is, he was part of the event. But Ryan and Clancy were - easily - the most compelling duo.

Agreed. Ryan and Clancy are the best.

Wallau and Dierdorf were excellent though too.
