You don't have to be a converted southpaw, to fall in love with your left hook.

It can be a bit of a magic bullet at times.

A doorman with a boxing background, who comes up against a steroid pumped knucklehead with not boxing experience, often finds a left hook to be an easy solution.

 

I reckon you'll find more orthodox fighters in love with their lead hook than southpaws in love with their read hand hook if that's what you mean. It's powerful, direct, and sets up your power hand.

 

Henry Cooper, Gerry Cooney, Oscar De La Hoya and Miguel Cotto all naturally left handed who boxed as orthodox. Marvin Hagler and Vasyl Lomachenko are both converted southpaws.

 

It's rumoured Liston was left handed. I believe his left to the body was considered "his" punch in his day. Foreman said Liston would sign with either hand however so who knows. Wilfredo Benitez was a lefty his hook was nice- very sharp.

The majority of boxers TBH. Most boxers that are right handed fight orthodox, even those with crispy beautiful left hooks.

An obvious notable standout would be Roy.

 

Hagler coming out orthodox in round 1 in attempt to throw SRL off didnt work so Hagler gave up round 1 easy. I always scored round 2 even but Hagler wasent getting the results he wanted and it wasent untill round 3 that he won his first round and this was because he gave up the orthodox stance and switched back to southpaw.
I did not know SRL was told to keep to Haglers left but in my opininion SRL had way more trouble with Haglers left when he was in southpaw stance.

 

My boxing coach and my Sensi was guilty of this. I'm a lefty but taught to fight orthodox.
But that's just how it was through the 70's and 80's, and earlier ....

Interesting observation.

I’m ambidextrous (or, as they say, amphibious, haha) — throw with my right hand, write with my left, when I played a little ball I could hit (equally bad) from either side but had more power batting left-handed.

I learned to box southpaw. My right hand is more deft — I can do more subtle things with it like hooking off the jab or whatever. My left is more powerful. I would switch it up some on the bag but never in sparring or anything because while I had a stiff left jab I couldn’t do much else with it well — hooks felt awkward, couldn’t combinate with it well.

Now southpaw, I can do pretty much whatever I want with my left … hook it into the body, hook to the body followed by hook to the head, combinate well with both hands. But turn me around and I look (and feel) like a klutz doing anything but jabbing with my left. No timing, no anything.
