At any rate, hope he recovers fully.

 

This should be a lesson for those who want fights to continue as a boxer is getting pummled with zero hope of winning.
Thinking about the recent Woods fight for one.

lol Wood fight is a terrible comparison because Wood was winning the fight handily before he got knocked down and stopped. I don't disagree with the stoppage but this is a terrible comparison.

 

The De Carolis loss was 9 months ago, any punches to the head are not good for your health, but attributing this present sad event, to the loss to the De Carolis bout is speculative.

Plenty of boxers suffer losses through heavy head punches, and are back fighting well before 9 months with no obvious ill effects.

This old sport of ours has its risks, but likewise there are sadly medical emergencies that happen to 30 yr olds who have never stepped into the squared circle.

Always sad to hear of boxers being in Danieles present position, hoping his fighting spirit carries him through to return to good health.

 

It always saddens me to see yet another boxer is seriously hurt & in a coma. As for referees stopping obviously one sided fights prematurely I'm all for that rather than let it go on & one fighter takes an horrific beating.
Better to be safe than sorry.

It sounds like the guy kept training after having a life threatening event. What did he think would happen? There's a reason Adonis Stevenson would never fight again even if it wasnt for age

 

Either he was cutting weight to hard and lost vital brain fluid or his sparring was too heavy which I doubt. This happens far too often in combat sports and guys need to start fighting at their natural weight. There very well might be other issues at hand but you never hear about a heavyweight going into a sudden coma even in a tough fight.

I followed his career probably as closely as pretty much non-Italian boxing fan, and called a few of his fights in my RBR threads, and honestly - this kind of development was always going to be a worry given his style (mediocre skilled and heavy-handed but not explosive plodder who gets drawn into brawls easily but with too good a chin to be 1-shot kayoed very often).

Usually fun to watch type of fighter but that sometimes comes with a dear price.

 

Didnt help he is a coke snorting party animal.

 

Elite fighters can get away with it (Hatton, Calzaghe, DLH - although I'm not sure Oscar had the habit while still active or if he picked it up during his promoter days) but yeah, not advisable.

 

I dont see how there is any doubt Oscar did it ehile still active.
