Miguel Angel Cuello, WBC Light heavyweight champion from May 21 1977 until he was dethroned by challenger Mate Parlov on Jan 7 1978 by KO 9. Parlov became the first fighter from a Communist nation to win a world title.
They're not too shabby "get out of town" destinations. I'd love to (and will) visit those countries - I have a particular interest in castles, and Germany has not shortage of them - though the Mrs. is worried about their rep. for serial killers. I told her we have our own premiere, serial killer state - South Australia. She simply replied that she never wants to go there either. Lol. Plenty of maps of Tassie? Hahaha. Not a totally "green" attitude, but hopefully they cleared a bit of the forest and shrubbery down there, you might've got lost without a compass and never found your way back out. Can you believe I did China in April 2019? In terms of timeline, I barely dodged the overseas COVID19 bullet. Ironically, I did later get quite crook during Xmas 2019- a type of walking pneumonia - not at all COVID related. Even so, desperate for attention, I flagged myself as Patient Zero (pre ordered printed T Shirt on its way (jk)) to anyone who would listen. No one did. And yes, to remain relevant and on point, I agree with your offerings as to worst champions.
Sorry to further detour this thread into travel destinations, but you and your Mrs. would be totally safe in Germany. Beautiful country, efficient transport network, some incredibly beautiful medieval towns and so many of the folk speak great English. I had planned to go to Krakow, Poland, with my Mrs just after the terrible war in Ukraine broke out, but she got spooked. I tried explaining to her that 0 deaths or injuries had occurred in Poland due to the war and that statistically the biggest risk to our health would be the drive to and from the airport, but to no avail....
Thanks Greg. I knew it would be at least as safe as most other reasonable holiday destinations. Can't wait to get there. I would've been a bit spooked myself by the outbreak of war in the Ukraine also given the proximity not just to Poland, but Krakow even more so. You never know which way these things might turn, esp. with a desperate, megalomaniacal nutjob at the helm. Hopefully you'll get to Poland in the not-too-distant future.
In my lifetime, I pick Leon Spinks as the worst, which is ironic in that most boxing people have the man he beat (Muhammad Ali) to win the belt as the GOAT Heavyweight. (Personally I reserve that honor for Joe Louis.)
Rene Jacquot was pretty unmemorable with a very boring style. Hard to see how he beat Don Curry and to be fair I have not seen this fight, he may have been terrific. His title loss to John Mugabi with a broken ankle is one of the worst title fights of all time. He did go 12 with Norris and Rosi though so perhaps I am being unfair. Actually we can throw Mugabi into the mix. A very good fighter but rubbish belt holder. KO1 over Jacquot as mentioned above and then KO1 loss to Norris. Then brutal dismantling by McClellan.
Not sure if anyone mentioned Sven Ottke yet? Johnny Saxton was twice a WW champ but he was heavily mob controlled and both his title winning efforts were blatant robberies against Gavlian and Basillio. There was a run of WBC flyweight champs in the 80s including Charlie Magri who all lost the title in their first defences. Not necessarily bad fighters but poor champions. Also Sakio Bika, Jeff Lacy.
No one has mentioned John Ruiz yet? Not to say he didn't pick up some W's, but I often hated the style he accumulated them with.
If I may briefly detour back, my wife was ill with similar to you at the same time. We'd been to Japan & Korea. Back on track maybe not the worst but most disappointing champion was Colin McMillan. He looked a genuine class act when he won the WBO feather title; stopped on a shoulder injury in his first defence he never beat a ranked opponent again.
