Seventh of May in Yokohama. WBC and WBO (second and third defenses of Fulton, respectively) super bantamweight championships of the world at stake. Inoue moves up from bantam, where he is the reigning undisputed and lineal champion (becoming the first Japanese fighter to unify all four belts in any division, as well as fhe first bantamweight to become undisputed in the "Big 4" era). Neither man has lost professionally. They combine for a record of 45 wins, no defeats. Inoue gives up three inches of reach to Fulton, and 1½" in height. Fulton has a 38% stoppage rate against 87.5 for Inoue.
While some might see his struggle to KO Paul Butler as a troubling sign, since Fulton is much bigger, just as elusive and more defensively sound. But that simply isn't the case. Unlike Butler, who showed up to survive, and even doing that, he doesn't have an argument that he won even a fraction of one round. Regardless, Fulton will want to win, and will not be content ceding round after round, so he'll throw and throw aplenty. Which will give Inoue who uses angles far better, finds openings, and has the far more impressive punch selection of the two, plenty of chances to land counter after counter, on a vulnerable frequently exposed Fulton. So one of two things will happen, Fulton gets countered until he stops throwing, goes into survival mode, and gives up trying to win. Or he doesn't, and eventually gets KTFO.
Can't find anything confirming this, but one has to imagine that Fulton negotiated on the shred of leverage he possesses as champ - since we all know the challenger is the A-side, hence this being in Yokohama - to at least arrange for a conditional rematch in Philly. If not he's a moron.
I'll be cheering for my blood but as a half Japanese, I'm used to disappointment. I think Fulton by SD.
A lot depends on why Fulton planned to go up to 126. Was it mainly a physical decision? If he was struggling to make 122 but stayed there for the money fight vs Inoue and, therefore, fights him drained, he's gonna get smoked; Inoue's power will easily traverse that 4llbs divide imho. If Fulton is still strong at the weight, then he's gonna be competitive - he's a volume puncher (risky vs a banger though), the bigger man and has a v solid jab. That said, I think he probably IS struggling at the weight and stayed at 122 for the money and will get KTFO...
True, but Cool Boy is no joke. I didn’t put any respect on his name until he beat Leo. I wouldn’t be surprised if Cool Boy pulled it off due to the size advantage.
Some people have long surmised that Naoya is packing thunder enough to sleep anybody short of lightweight, so...guess we're going to find out how much the size advantage matters. ¯\_(ツ)_/¯
I think Fulton is good enough that Monster will be more cautious than usual, thus Fulton loses a 9-3/8-4 decision but makes it to the final bell.
Always a question mark when going up in weight. Inoue looked outsized in some fights at 118, so Id imagibe 122 will be a further challenge. Hes looked so dominating thiough, that its hard to see him losing. Ive got no dog in this fight. Hats off to bth guys for taking the fight. Cant wait for it.
