The first question you need to ask, is what is an over rated fighter? A great fighter, who is not as great as people thing, is still a great fighter. At least give them their due. In my eyes the strongest example of an over rated fighter, is someone who is perceived as being a world beater, who is much less than a world beater. The most egregious examples of this, are found among heavyweights who look like head to head monsters on paper, but whose career accomplishments fell well short of this. Gerry Cooney, Frank Bruno, and David Tua, are three examples that illustrate this well. People hypothesize that they would have reigned supreme in other eras, while in practice they probably simply found their level.
Having bashed the modern fighters, it might only be fair to suggest that some champions pre 1900, got pushed up the rankings because there was very little before to compare them to. Some people on this forum think that Jim Corbett is over rated. It must be noted that the IBRO had him in their top 20 heavies of all time, while I was posting on this forum. Now if mcvey and others are right about him, then we must conclude that he was enormously over rated back then.
I would argue Dempsey, Ali and Tyson brought more attention to boxing than any other boxers in history. Even casuals knew and cared about them. I would add Joe Louis.
I don't care which of the biased Dempsey-haters covered it. I've read enough on my own to form an educated opinion.
If a bunch of young casuals were asked, I think they would say Ali, Floyd or M. Tyson, in America. As for my opinion, I've heard so many called 'overrated', that it's hard to pick one. I guess the only thing I can point to is when we're having debates with unreasonable fans. Some will continually go to great lengths to defend their favorites and are be shown to be biased time & again. This is a more tangible thing for me. Funnily enough, my pick for all time greatest fighter, Harry Greb, may be the most overrated! The nerve of all these people rating him the GOAT, when we've never even seen the guy fight! And in the film we do have, he looks like a mongoose on crack.
Agreed, can't pick just one so for today I'll pick Tyson Fury. Was Anthony Joshua before he was exposed
