So after Witherspoon lost to Bonecrusher he actually rebounded quite well in the 90s, and I believe he was ranked in the 10 for quite awhile. He stopped Jorge Luis Gonzalez quicker than a prime Bowe did, and for me he beat Mercer who was fresh off almost beating Lewis. I think there was some interesting fights for him in the 90s, and I'm surprised he was never quite able to quite secure that big fight. But overall how do you see him faring against Bowe, Holyfield, Lewis, Foreman, Holmes rematch, 90s Tyson.
I was really pulling for Tim to get his shot back in the 90’s the Mercer fight just really seemed to derail all his momentum. Which sucks because I think he deserved the nod against Ray. It actually sort of ended up being a sort of swan song for both of their careers. Neither man was really in a high profile fight while fresh enough to still win it for the rest of their career. As far as all the potential guys you listed above facing Tim I don’t know if Tim would’ve had enough to beat any of them anymore, but I definitely think he’s a handful for most all of them.
I saw a bunch of his comeback fights on USA and a few other networks. Anders Ecklund, Jeff sims, Jose Ribalta, Pritchard, Martin ( loss ), Tony Willis. He still had a lot of fight in him and very few fighters wanted anything to do with him. I always thought back then that he would have been a handful for a lot of the top guys at the time
Just think, if Mike Dokes could have given Holyfield a tough time, then what does an experienced, fit, Witherspoon do? Not saying he win but it could be a hell of a fight. And what about Tony Tubbs against Riddick.. Put Tim in there, see what happens? I think also he'd have a good chance against old George. But Foreman s not risking it imo. Tyson early 90 s is still too much for Tim but it's a possible decision loss. Like to have seen Spoon verse Ruddock too.
If Witherspoon lands his overhand right on Holyfield he could be in some trouble. Holyfield like to go to war in the early 90s, and was hurt badly by the likes Bert Cooper with a right hand.
I think part of the way things worked out (or didn’t) the way they did (or didn’t) is Tim didn’t want anything to do with Don King, who more or less had a stranglehold on the heavyweight division … and Don wasn’t going to work with Tim unless he could tie him into a long-term deal again.
Yeah some good points. I’ve also said that I think the Dokes that fought Holyfield was one of the best versions of himself. He was no longer at his peak Physical abilities probably, but he was completely Drug free at the time highly motivated and in great shape. Now I’m curious about that version of Dokes vs Witherspoon. I realize Holyfield - Dokes was 89 and the thread says 90’s but just wanted to drop a few more things about Dynamite Dokes. If he would’ve been in the condition he was at different times during his title reign and early career (at times) there’s no way he could’ve put up the type of effort he did against Holyfield. That’s why I’ve always maintained that was a very, very good Dokes.
He amazed me in the Holyfield fight, really did I thought he was done. He probably thought this was his big chance to get in the big league again. Sadly by the time he faced Riddick, that was gone. What could have been...
People often forget Dokes was outboxing Ruddock up until he got caught by "The Smash". Another 80s Heavyweight in Greg Page also fought valiantly against Ruddock taking hellacious punches.
Witherspoons prime was in the 80s with maybe his best performance early in his career against Holmes in 83. He would have struggled to win a rematch against british bum Bruno in the 90s when clearly he was way past his best and yeah like everyone here I know Witherspoon sometimes reads these threads an posts here but while I don’t wanna upset him I just gotta say it the way I see it
