Joe may have been prevented opportunity challenge for the Heavyweight title, but he was definitely a winner in his retirement from the squared circle. So many ex fighters of that era fell on hard times and were of poor health, but Joe became a boxing ref, gym owner, then a taxi and limo hire boss, a real winner in life.
Sorry Mc, I was looking for more photos of Jeanette and his wife - and I stumbled across this photo - damn, until now I'd never seen this photo before. Sorry to disrupt the theme but I didn't know where to post it. This content is protected
For such a huge racist (as has been said by many in here) I am SHOCKED to see Dempsey loitering around so many black boxers and fans.
Right? For all the talk of him being a racist he sure had a lot of good things said about him by black fighters like Langford, Tate, Jim Johnson, Jamaica Kid, and several of his other black sparring partners.
I read a report, that I cannot verify or find the source, that Dempsey was on an exhibition tour down south and the locals would not allow his to spar with a black boxer so he cancelled the event. Again, not sure of the source. There are plenty of videos and photos showing him boxing and training with black boxers. It's been said on here by you-know-who "it's dumb to think that just because he lived, trained and associated with blacks that he wasn't a racist". Not being a racist (or at least I don't think I am), if I was a racist against a certain group would I want to hand out with them and have them touch my body and virtually hug them during boxing them? Guys like Tunney, Young Stribling and Willard who were vocally racist did not train with black boxers, and for good reason in their minds.
Actually it was New York City in 1918 and Dempsey refused to box Jeanette despite being booed by the audience.
I KNEW you had your app on tonight! Actually, no, the story I read was that it happened in the South. I'm aware of the story you mentioned. Has nothing to do with what I said but for sure I knew you'd drop it in here just to be your usual pissant. I'm also aware that I can't re-find the source so a grain of salt is in play.
So you cant back up what you are saying but your mad that I corrected you and admit Im right but it bugs the **** out of you. Got it. And who is the pissant?
And of course, the idea that Dempsey simply couldnt have been racist because he employed black fighters is as asinine as it can be. As Ive said before, this would mean all of those southern ex slave holders who employed blacks as "the help" werent really racist.
You are the pissant. I've said on two different posts that I cannot find the report I mentioned and so cannot provide a source. As a published author myself, I readily admit that a statement that can't be backed up with a source is valueless. I don't know if this is readable, but it's an interesting NY Times article with quotes from Greb and Dempsey in 1926. Dempsey claims to have tried "for five years" to get Wills in the ring, but of course he's lying and scared, right? https://timesmachine.nytimes.com/timesmachine/1926/08/27/104213240.html?pageNumber=12
