I've always thought '66 was the weakest year of the 60s. I like Torres-Cotton, but I consider it way more tactical than exciting. I forgot about the Tiger-Torres fights though. Both were a lot more exciting than the Cotton bout, although the rematch came in '67. Frazier-Bonavena I is definitely a contender for '66, as is the Ramos fight Saintpat mentioned. I know several are escaping my mind.

On the subject of the Torres-Cottton fight winning '66s fight of the year, I too am mystified over that one. Ring used to pick fight of the year and also go into detail regarding their 4 or 5 runner-ups. I wish I had that annual. It might have shed some light on their reasoning and what other fight may have been in the running. For the heck of it I looked over a few fighters fighting in that era and I came up with 3 that really could have taken this. All with good write-ups on boxrec.

-Horacio Accavallo v Efren Torres - sounded like a 15 round shootout

-Jesus Pimental v Katsuo Saito - another shootout

-Raul Rojas v 'Pajarito' Moreno I - sounded like a featherweight version of Hagler Hearns

Good picks scar. I know what your saying about Ring to be true; I think they probably chose Cotton-Torres because Cotton was seen as an old veteran, and he fared so well against the heavy-fisted Torres, and according to many, won the fight. So it was kind of a comeback fight for the old veteran.

I think some of the FOTY's especially in the old black/white era, were chosen for the event itself rather than actually being the best fight of the year.

For example Ali/Liston 1 was not a great fight, yet it won FOTY because it's such a historical fight and one of the biggest upsets ever.

But it was a fight with some unusual occurrences in it, and it was a very fun fight, even though it wasn't a war.

    Holmes vs Weaver I

Good heavyweight brawl. I was surprised that Larry was puffing away from round 4. Despite Weaver hurting him it looked like Larry was more tired than seriously hurt. Maybe he underestimated Hercules? Impressed by Weavers boxing, he was out jabbing Larry at points in the fight. Larry was lucky the bell went in round 10, once of the best rounds of heavyweight action, but then Mike was also lucky not to be KO's clean in round 11 as the bell saved him. I was amazed he got up, a tough tough dude. I can understand why the crowd wanted it to go on but Mike was a sitting duck with a round 12 with full round ahead and he looked both stunned and dog tired.

The scoring is closer than I thought, round 6 could have gone to Holmes but Mike was forcing the fight. Shows how strong Larry was and also his amazing powers of recuperation.

Bit of trivia, movie star Ryan O'Neal was part of the commentary team!

    1 - Holmes 10 Weaver 9

    2 - Holmes 10 Weaver 9

    3 - Holmes 10 Weaver 9

    4 - Holmes 9 Weaver 10

    5 - Holmes 9 Weaver 10

    6 - Holmes 9 Weaver 10

    7 - Holmes 10 Weaver 9

    8 - Holmes 10 Weaver 9

    9- Holmes 10 Weaver 9

    10 - Holmes 9 Weaver 10

    11- Holmes 10 Weaver 8

    Holmes wins TKO12

    Holmes 106 Weaver 102

Always loved this fight. It was frantic and messy to be sure, but brutal.

Good man nice to see your scorecard I'd be interested to see your scorecards for Norton/Witherspoon. When you post them I'll compare it with my scorecards.

One of the most slept-on truly great heavyweight fights imo. And round 11 is an all-time great round.
