Your Tyson hate blinds you. Only now, at the end, do you understand the true power of the dark side...

Duran is overrated too, then. So is Sonny Liston and even JC Chavez when he quit against Frankie Randall. Hell even warrior Holyfield quit against Sherman Williams from a cut.

    Shame shame.

    Yes.
Louis stands no chance against a more modern HW great, he gets beat to a pulp by guys like Tua and Morrison, nevermind Tyson, Lewis, etc.
Ali gets credited as the GOAT when he ain't even top 5 p4p. He was gifted way too many wins.
Foreman was slow and had average skill.
SRL would get humiliated by Mayweather.

Oh come on man, you're way out of line.
Why on Earth would the great Joe Louis get beaten to a pulp by David Tua ( beaten by Chris Byrd ) or
Tommy Morrison ( knocked out in ONE round by Michael Bentt !!! ).Look,I'm not belittling either Byrd or
Morrison, they were both fine fighters. However Joe Louis would be an overwhelming favourite against
    these guys.
Sure Ali maybe edged out of the top 5 p4p by warriors like Sugar Ray Robinson or Henry Armstrong but
if Ali isn't top 5 he must be damn close to it.Also when Ali is referred to as the GOAT folks are usually talking
about Ali's status as the greatest ever heavyweight champion.
As for SRL getting '' humilated '' by Mayweather '' this is absurd.Leonard's triumphs involves such diverse
ATGs as Wilfred Benitez,Tommy Hearns and Marvelous Marvin Hagler.Do you genuinely think this man
    gets '' humiliated '' by Mayweather ?

I've seen a few people saying Ali, how can Ali possibly be overrated? He's widely considered by the public and his own peers (other boxers) as one of the greatest. How can you be overrated when there's a consensus among damn near everyone? We all have seen numerous fights, we know what he could do, what he did and how much he accomplished.

I'd say Harry Greb is overrated, we really don't know how he even looked in the ring, and yet...........he's rated as one of the greatest. I think there's a nostalgia to ranking him.

Nope not a Tyson hater at all. I think he's a great fighter and im a fan. My problem is with the fans that only look at the plus side of his career and put him on a pedestal.
Next time it would be a good idea for you not to make assumptions about someone else

Who cares if his fans do that! Why does it bother you so much? You think you're putting them in their place by posting nonsense? And it's quite clear that you're not a fan of Mike Tyson with your posts.

No offense, but I think it’s cowardly to express fringe opinions online and then put on a big show about ignoring those who disagree with you rather than backing up said fringe opinions.

This thread would be crazy deep if it included hype trains that got derailed.

I feel like Ricky Hatton was among the most overrated fighters I've ever seen. Leaky defense even at the regional level, completely square, bad balance. His run consists of good names in their lowest form like Tszyu and Castillo, the worst champion ever by some metrics in Maussa, and Collazo, who is tough but made Ricky look pretty vulnerable and was likely the fight that made FMJ feel confident to beat him. Took the Hamed (another overrated fighter) route and basically packed it in after getting beaten, but at least we got a two for one there.

Abner Mares. He was pretty good and fought some good guys, but just a light hitting, fragile fighter. I feel like he was really getting shoved down the throats of HBO viewers and was not the business when it comes down to the endgame. Kind of got exposed before the big payoff in the fight with Agbeko. Same thing with Juanma Lopez, who was kind of outed as a gangly gunslinger with no movement or balance before he even got a chance to cash in vs. Gamboa.

Lucian Bute was overrated and I knew he was not a top tier world champion when I saw him knocked out by Andrade and saved by corrupt reffing. Jermain Taylor was really overrated for a spell. Overall, I was leaning toward Tyson but his knockout reel is too sweet. Dempsey and Marciano aren't as relevant as they were in the cigar lounge boxing days, so I don't really care if older fight fans like them even if their respective bodies of work don't impress me at an 'all time great' level. I don't have to argue that Ali was way better than both of them generally speaking, and I feel that is a positive development in the historiography of boxing.

All time, I definitely can see Tyson, Dempsey, Marciano, and Vitali as being 'overrated' but then I can see the flipside of why they should be rated highly. Brian Nielsen was an imposter and basically had a country convinced that he was a real 60-0 fighter or whatever. That is historically overrated. Butterbean got more ESPN time, money and attention than tons of truly great fighters during his run. In fact, Butterbean is one of the success stories in boxing, but a lot of fans at the time thought he was really a top pro because of the amount of coverage he got and the crazy KOs he produced.

I think Dempsey is a fair point to end on because he snagged the title, held it hostage, took time off to basically just be a public figure, didn't look great on tape, lost the title to a LHW, and still had the country convinced he was the best ever and those sentiments echoed well into the next 50 years. Dempsey the nightclub owner had all of NYC thinking he was really it. And that extended out through the popular media channels NYC had a chokehold on during the early-mid 20th century--so Dempsey propaganda was everywhere and for me, that sucked. Marciano only fought like 10-15 tough fights among the 49, didn't look great in many of them, and at least half of that group of 15 was against older fighters past their day.

Vitali is carried by his reputation that we never saw him hurt badly to the best of my memory. Retiring early just to come back and clean out the D-tier of HBO heavyweights before calling it a day. A top fighter but man some people think he is the second coming just because he gave Lennox a tough fight.

Everyone knows why Tyson is overrated--he lost too much because he didn't keep up his training long enough for us to see if he was really great. He's like the Wal Mart of boxing. Everyone knows him and he's everywhere, but really, once the true 1990s heavyweights matured, he fell out of the picture. He couldn't hang with those guys. He needed to stay among the Berbicks, Thomases, and Tubbs of the world, because once real 1990s HWs started entering the picture, it became more apparent that Tyson was extra dominant due to being able to run through a bunch of also-rans (and all of the upstate NY cab union) en route to the title.

From what I recall anyone who has cited Ali has specified it's overrated by the general public.

If you went to a busy city centre street, stopped 100 x people at random & asked them who the greatest boxer of all time is, my guess is that Ali would be the most common answer, whilst I don't think Greb would get a single vote. Yet most serious boxing historians would rank Greb as having a greater record, p4p, than Ali. So, people are saying the general public overrate Ali compared to some other greats, relative to boxing historians. This is self-evident, imo.
