Collins lost a unanimous decision to Mike McCallum in 1990 three years after McCallum beat Curry.

They would have been interested after Collins beat Eubank twice but in Collins final fight he was floored by a bum, he then retired when Calzaghe was coming up and wanted to fight him, probably ducked Joe because he was protecting his big payday v Jones but to come back and ask for fight 3 years later makes no sense.

    Rule of duck:

Is the guy the best fighter in the world excepting yourself? If not, you can't duck him.

Is this a career's best payday for you? If not, you aren't ducking him.

Collins was retired when this happened.

    Timing was bad.

I remember Collins calling him out back in the day....
To be fair, EVERYONE was calling Jones out, it's not like he could a fought everyone, but Collins was a legit 168er with a belt and a some good wins on his resume.
Roy probably sons him, but we'll be never know ...
One knock I have against Roy's prime was that he never went to UK or fought any of their people over here. Always used the excuse (not Roy himself, but boxing media types) that they were UK level fighters....
But there were quite a few exciting and decent level UK fighters between 168 and 175 , including Collins. There was also Calzaghe, Robin Reid, Benn,(who was basically washed up, but still), Rogichichi, Ottke, and several others.
Any one of them would have been a better fight than Bryant Brannon, Richard Frazier, David Telesco, and others of their ilk.

Not to mention Lennox Lewis was champ, imagine if there had been an all US vs UK card with Lewis headlining and Jones on comain against one of those UK fighters

Roy Jones ducked Europe. To fight a bunch of Amerilevel talents like Toney, Vinnie Credenza, Bernard Hoskins, Peter Griffin, and Doug Minchin.

Steve is a legend in his own mind.

There is no evidence that Roy ducked Collins.

And Collins has conveniently left out several pieces of vital information from that radio interview.

It’s not as simple as that though.

You have to look at the timelines.

    The career trajectories.

    The politics involved.

Collins was never the man at any weight. And, he brought no money to the equation. Nobody "ducked" him. Jones would have ruined Collins if they fought. And, if Jones was pissed off and motivated, Collins probably wouldn't even see the 7th round.

I do respect the fact that Collins wanted a fight with Jones and chased him for it, but he was a nobody to Jones who brought next to nothing to the table.

By the time Collins had made his name to a UK audience from his four fights with Eubank and Benn, Jones was preparing to step up to Light Heavyweight to fight McCallum for the WBC belt there, and once he moved up in weight he never came back to Super Middleweight.

Collins didn't bring a bigger payday than any dozen of fighters Jones could get in America - including two of the three people who had beaten Collins to that point - and the WBO Super Middleweight belt wasn't attractive when he was eyeing up Light Heavyweight belts on his road to an eventual Heavyweight title fight.
