Steve Collins: "Roy Jones ducked me"

Not true.

It’s not as straight forward as that.

Roy had just taken onboard a second advisor, in Murad Muhammad. He’s in the video, behind Roy, with the shades and the beard.

Directly after the fight, Roy gave his long time advisor, Stan Levin, the green light to make the fight. So the following week, Levin started negotiations with Collins’s team.

However, whilst that was happening, Muhammad had met with HBO’s Lou DiBella. And he told Muhammad that the network had no desire to make a fight with Collins, who’d been out of the ring for 2 years. They instead wanted Roy to fight an undisputed fight with Reggie Johnson instead, who held the IBF belt.

Muhammad then talked Roy out of the Collins fight, and told him to fight a unification with Johnson instead. Roy then informed Levin, and Levin was very angry, as it’d made him look bad. It caused a lot of friction in the camp.

Dibella did offer Collins a lifeline though, telling him that if he proved himself in a few fights, he’d consider making a fight with Roy in the future.

Collins then got himself a slot on the undercard of Joe Calzaghe’s fight with Ricky Thornberry. But Collins never fought his opponent, as he suffered a knockout in training, where he was then advised to retire by a doctor. He then permanently retired.

 

Where did I post saying that McCallum was a champ when Jones beat him ?

 

Why did you bother posting, McCallum was far older when he fought Jones, his body looked awful, after beating Collins he went on a year later to give Toney a good fight.

 

Agreed. Roy saw how Collins handled both Nigel and Chris. Didn’t want none of that gas.

 

No way. Collins had an iron chin and Jones was, as we know, chinny. Lou Del Valle floored him.

 

Sure did. Collins made it well known he wanted to fight him....Collins was no slouch. It was a quacker.

 

Handled Eubank and Benn?

He barely beat Eubank in their first fight, and Benn was shot.

And he only rematched Benn due to his injury in their first fight.

Collins didn’t look great in any of those fights.

And Roy didn’t duck him.

I’ve already told you that HBO wouldn’t air a fight between them in 1999.

Think i remember watching that fight. Woods was a half decent fighter that had a go and was always competetive if anything else. Until he met roy anyway. The levels we,re like night and day.

Tbf to clinton roy was just more than a bit special.

 

Why wouldn’t I post ? The simple fact is there is nobody on Collins record to even think that he could beat Jones as well as Collins only ever being a WBO champion which wasn’t even recognised by any of the other sanctioning bodies until years after Collins had retired.

 

True but Eubank was highly rated by pundits when Collins beat him to take the WBO title.

 

The first Collins/Eubank fight is infamously the one where Eubank did not go in for the kill after he hurt Collins in the 10th round and threw away his chance of victory - with the spectre of the Watson fight often cited as the reason why Eubank held back - and Collins, by his own admission, collapsed in the dressing room after the fight because it took so much out of him:

The second fight was a closer affair which resulted in a split decision win for Collins.

I dont think anyone could watch the two Eubank/Collins fights and come away with the impression that it was easy work the Irishman.

 

I don’t give a **** what you “told” me First off… I TOLD YOU YDKSAB and secondly… Collins clearly beat Chris and Eubank himself admitted that. Benn was NOT that far past his best. That’s just you trying to spin actual facts again. THEY BOTH LOST to Steve. End of story. And it’s clear as day that Roy didn’t “Fancy” a fight with Collins. This is really just common knowledge at this point.

Wasn’t easy no. But it was a clear Deserved win for Steve. And the guts that he showed surviving the shots that he did (In Both Fights) was enough to make Roy swerve that fight.

 

I think roy would have won hands down. But we should have defo seen these fights.

Unbelievable standard when you look back at it. Britain with benn, eubank, watson and collins. America with roy jones, hopkins, toney, mccallum and even gerald and more. Some standard.

As much as it pains me to say it the americans we,re the better fighters....but them brits we,re serious fighters as well. I think benn could have been someone that was always capable of an upset. He did beat gerald...but in fairness without taking anything away from benn....it probably wasnt the best version of gerald that could have been in the ring that night.

Benn v roy jones would have been good. Roy v gerald also.

I still say roy stands above them all. Which is saying something because it was some competition.

Calzaghe would have been good in the mix. Still think mcallum, roy, toney would have beat him. Benn and eubank possibly as well. I know people will disagree with that tho.
