They actually have some similarities, as far as stalking their prey and cutting off the ring. I think Hagler just came up in a better era facing real opponents where.as GG came along during the network showcase era and was able to get away with fighting the David Lemouxs of the world while the networks blew smoke up his opponents asses as if they were so great. Really, he had a couple good wins, Jacobs (hight contestable), Kell (tougher than expected) and he never offered either a run back. I think punch for punch GG may have actually hit the harder of the two, but Hagler maintained a better punch variety and better mobility.. Also Hagler probably had the better gas tank, and probably by a significant amount. They were both divas, but GG definitely the bigger diva. I'm surprised he doesn't just do his ring walk with a purse and high heels just to keep it real with everyone
A brilliant question and two fantastic, dominant Champions at their respective peaks. I'd say that Golovkin had the better orthodox punch variety and mixed his shots better. He probably had the heavier single punch too and was wicked to the body. My Nephew told me that every kid in his gym was trying to throw that corkscrew right hand just like in my day, we were all trying the left hook to the body like Barry McGuigan. Hagler was such a remorseless trainer that he taught himself to fight equally well off either side. Even if you countered him, he didn't get worried and switch back. He knew that to rearrange your feet and angles would take two or three rounds, then, he could turn round again. They call it fight IQ these days and he had it in spades. If they had been around at the same time, it would have been fascinating.
I would say so, yeah. He could switch his entire game from one side to the other. Golovkin though, was superb at holding the centre of the ring. You'd use three steps to his one.
Not quite on the level of how GG pouted his way to trilogy with Canelo, but there were some definite parallels with the ways CC and Hagler chased Canelo and Leonard. Much like GG, Hagler refused to give credit to the victor in a close fight, then took it a step further and retired into thin air, never to be heard from or seen again. His fanboys justify it as best they can, but it was still an ultra diva move for a guy who had been so liked and respected by the fans
Hagler edges GGG out in terms of skill, although Golovkin is one of the most underrated technical boxers of the era.
Golovkin didn't have bad footwork at all, of course. He could get inside, just right. But Hagler.. he could spring at any time.. I can't say that about Golovkin.
Who was better defensively Who had the better jab Who was the better combination puncher Who had the better inside fighting Who cut the ring off better
Power = GGG, though Hagler could whack too Chin = Both cast iron, Haglers arguably more proven Handspeed = Hagler Footwork = Both excellent, slight edge to Hagler Stamina and work rate = Both excellent, though GGG a little more one paced, Hagler could pace himself and he could be relentless Versatility = Both good, but whilst GGG could box behind his jab and he could stalk/pressure, Hagler had more strings to his bow, more versatile attributes and style, imo. Ring IQ = Both excellent, slightest of edges to Hagler.
